Social Medias Negative impact in our society
Social media plays a major part in the way today’s youth are growing up. Although it may have its benefits, it causes a huge negative impact in our society. Social media has drastically changed since it was introduced in 1979 when Usenet systems were first conceived by Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis, and even since Mark Zuckerberg created “Facebook” in 2004. Social media sites such as Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and Omegle expose today’s adolescence to things they shouldn’t be seeing, and it is as easy as logging in. These are; one, continuously putting users of Social Media, (and even the internet), in danger, two, damaging face to face socializing skills, and three, exposing our youth to explicit materials.

Firstly, Social media poses many threats in today’s society. It is accessible from any Computer, Phone, Tablet or IPod with an internet connection. This means that it is easier for children as young as 8 or 9 to connect to a social media site. This in turn exposes them to nudity, swearing and the worst of all; pedophiles and rapists. Rheana Murray of New York Daily News stated that a whopping one in ten profiles online are fake (May 2013). This means that at least 10% or more of a child’s friends on Facebook could be phony. The Carly Ryan incident in 2006 proves that the internet is a very dangerous platform for children, teenagers and even adults to be using. Unfortunately, fake profiles are not just used for using fake aliases. Even if someone has only, say 10 friends on a social media site, and know that all of these are authentic, there are still ways for hackers to access your information; such as your location, photos or even bank details. Bullying is also a huge danger to youth on the internet. Back before Social Networking was created, bullying stopped when school stopped. Now, a child being

What was once thought as advantageous to our society, is now wreaking havoc on the innocent minds of young adolescents. Created in 1997, social media was envisioned as a tool that would help others communicate with those who live far away. Social media was a tool that was supposed to increase communication and allow for more socialness in the society, however its plan was flawed. The first symptoms of social media started to rise in the early 2000’s, when the internet became a common tool for anonymous users to say what they please without thinking of the consequences to the other anonymous users on the internet. With the rise of animosity came the rise of cyberbullying, a new easier way for malefactors to put down others. Along with social…

In recent years social media has become increasingly popular, allowing millions of users around the world to create, share, and exchange information, in ways that a decade ago, would never have been possible. Today 93% of college students have a Facebook (43) and 93% of Americans between the ages of twelve and seventeen are using the internet in some form. (43) Growth of online social media has had an undeniable impact on society in the United States as well as internationally, greatly altering the way people live their lives. Social networking has connected many employers and job seekers, enabling associations that would never have been able to occur otherwise. Also, social media allows breaking news to be spread much more rapidly as eye witnesses update online profiles and share information before the newspapers or television media providers have time to respond. Moreover, use of online media allows shy or isolated individuals more confidence and helps them to form relationships that they have difficulty making face to face. Despite these positive aspects of social media, many experts feel that social media and its escalation in recent years has had detrimental effect of American society, as well as that of the world as a whole. Many argue that the freedom of users to post their opinions contributes to the spread of falsified information, and leads many to not trust accurate information they may encounter on the internet. Additionally, information or pictures an individual has posted on the internet may impede their admission to a certain college or deter employers from hiring them. Psychologists have even speculated that the growing use of social media has had a damaging effect on the mental health of its users and leaves them feeling depressed or isolated. While these are all worthwhile points that are in some cases true, the positive aspects of social media continue to outweigh the negatives and the government should…
