Need Assessment
NEED ASSESSMENT

Submitted by: Faryal Aslam

INTRODUCTION
A need assessment is a systematic process through which the needs can be determined and addressed through an analytical exploration which identifies how things are going compared to how they should be. Following are four step involved in the process of need assessment.
PERFORMING A GAP ANALYSIS
The first step in the need assessment process is to perform a gap analysis. In this process, the current and the desired states are analyzed and any discrepancy in the desired and actual knowledge, skills and abilities is identified and the HRD takes specific actions on order to eliminate that difference.
IDENTIFICATION OF PRIORTIES AND IMPORTANCE
The second step in the need assessment process is to determine whether the needs identified in the first step are relevant and urgent. If the needs coincides with the needs and requirements s of the organization, than they are worth addressing. The needs that have greater impact must be addressed before those which are relatively less important.
CAUSES OF PERFORMANCE PROBLEMS AND THE OPPORTUNITIES
After the identification and prioritization of the organizational and personal needs, the next step is to determine the specific problem areas and the opportunities that organization is providing regarding them. It is important to identify the requirements of the performance before the implementation of any solution. SOLUTIONS AND GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES
If the employees are not performing their job duties effectively, some interventions must be made at this stage to point them into the right direction. HRD can do so by either training the employees or introducing some organizational development activities.

The Merchants of Cool is a documentary about researchers and marketers exploring out into the society to see what is popular or cool in the latest trends within teenagers. These people would spend days going around the streets, malls, and even schools to find out what is the next big thing that will give them the attention from people. They would have the teenagers participate in surveys and studies while analyzing them thoroughly to portray the founded characteristics into the media. These marketers realized that teenagers are actually portraying themselves to the media so the media would then reveal it back to the teenagers, which teenagers then sees it and portrays them that way. The only disadvantage of that was once the marketer reveals what is cool to the world, they would have to go on the radar and find out what is the next thing that is cool. We live in a culture, a consumer culture to be specific where we are driven to buy things, especially teenagers, which is fueled by corporate motivation to annual grow profits. There was a teenager in the video and she stated that no matter where she goes, she must always get ready to look nice before she leaves the house. As mentioned earlier, sometimes the media depicts things that will cause teenagers to feel like they are not good enough, thin enough, or pretty enough and the negative thoughts build up. Although this video was made about twelve years ago, teenagers are still the same as today. Teenagers should not have look into the media or advertisement to find out what they want or how are they supposed to be. Each individual is different with a unique mind so every teenager should act and be like however they want. Teenagers just needs to understand that the cool hunters are just being paid to find people who they think are cool to ask questions and find answers, which advertisers and producers will then use this cool information to sell more…

Assessment – the collection and processing of data to provide information for use in making decisions about the nature of the problem and what is to be done about it – is a cognitive, thinking process; it involves thinking about data that have been collected. The outcome of assessment is a service plan, which provides a definition of the problem for work, objectives or solutions to be achieved, and an action plan to accomplish the objectives (Comptom, Galaway, & Cournoyer, 2004, p. 134).…

The functions of assessing is to start with the initial assessment, this is where we identify if they have any previous experience or knowledge that is relevant to the qualification that they will be assessed on and find out their individual learning style and what support is needed in there learning because everyone absorbs information differently. You can also find this information out from application forms or interviews. The next stage is assessment planning, this will include meeting with your learner about the outcome of the qualification and what work they need to do to achieve this qualification, as an assessor you would plan target dates for their work assigned to be done, The next stage is a continuous monitoring (formative assessment). The methods that can be used, could be assessor led by observations or learner led like writing statements this would allow the leaner and the assessor to plan further learning, this method could also be used at the end of the qualification (summative) where the assessor and learner would have evidence that the leaning has taken place for that particulate unit. As an assessor you will have reviewed the learner’s work that was given previously and you will give constructive assessment feedback on what they have achieved this time and what they need to do for next time to progress to the next level. Reviewing the overall progress of your learner can be done at anytime with your learner until they leave the company, this will give you the opportunity to discuss with your learner any issues they have and do they need more support in completing the qualification. The stages are then repeated after every unit until the learner has successfully completed the qualification; this also ensures the learner has a structured learning schedule throughout the qualification.
