Course Description: Dance Composition is a practical exploration of a variety of processes and elements that may be used in the study of creating dances/choreography. This class is also designed to develop proficient dancers for the professional world of dance specific to choreography. It will also help in the perfection of Dance vocabulary and basic technique as they lead classes. This responsibility requires knowledge of students enrolled in your class in order to check roll, boost student morale, and ensure involvement and engagement from students during activities. In addition, Dance Composition student’s warm-up the class helps with across the floor combinations, choose costumes, music and help in the choreography of Fall and Spring Show Dances. This class demands that each student be open minded and ready to work hard both physically and mentally.

Course Prerequisites: Approval of Dance Teachers.

Objectives:
1 Dance Styles and History: Dance Composition Students will understand dance as a world art form that has developed diversely across space and time, and share this knowledge with your dance class students.
2 Technique: Dance Composition Students will help to train and condition the student dancers for strength, flexibility, and coordination.
3 Choreography: Dance Composition Students will compose their own dances to teach and perfect with their dance class students using dance elements.
4 Performance: Dance Composition Students will perform dances created both by them and the teacher. They will also have their choreography showcased at both the Fall and Spring Shows.
5 Portfolio: Dance Composition students will keep a portfolio of creative works, collaborative and original and journal about their experiences throughout the course.
CLASS OUTLINE:
Classroom Days: Check Roll, Warm-up Classes, Follow Daily Lesson Plans Set up by the Teacher, work on current project (choreography, history, costuming etc.)
Test Days: Be available to help students get encouraged and prepared for test. Be available to aide the teacher by evaluating performers with notes and comments.
Rehearsal Days: Be at rehearsal to help set and guide your class during their time. Be available to rehearse any dance that you may be performing.
Performance Days: Must be at performance to evaluate and offer critiques to your class. Must be at performance if you are dancing in a number.

Assessment and Grading:
Daily Tasks 50%
Mid Term/ Final 50% (choreography)

Required Materials:
Clothing: Dance Composition Students may wear any dance clothing.

Attendance and Timeliness Policy:
 Must be ready to take roll when dancers enter classroom. Must be dressed and ready to teach when dancers return from locker room.
 When an absence will occur, the student must let the teacher know 24 hours in advance, to ensure proper lesson plan changes. (Unless ill)
 If you become ill on a dance class day please let dance teachers know ASAP by calling the dance office (512-570-2147)

Discipline—The Three Bs:
1 ♦ Be prompt: Be ready to work at designated class start time. Chronic lateness will result in lowered grade.
2 ♦ Be polite: Do not make rude or judgmental comments to other students. Remember, you are in class to help shape the students into confident performers. They will take their cues on behavior and the treatment of others from you!
3 ♦ Be persistent: The reward of mastery comes after effort. Effort takes time and patience.

    Prior to this year, I had never had the opportunity to attend a musical theatre master class. On the other hand, I am extremely accustomed to dancer master classes and I found it interesting to compare and contrast the way classes are held. Each Friday the dancer department takes a master class with a different professional dancer. Besides the specific dance genre, the classes possess numerous similarities to each other.
