Native American Project Summary: The Navajo
Our group chose the Navajo Tribe of the Southwest region including New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and a small part of Colorado. We chose this group due to it’s relevance of present day history. The Navajo tribe is the largest tribe in the US today covering 27,000squaremiles
on a reservation in the Four Corner region with more than 250,000 members. The Navajo were a very culture enriched society with many effects on the modern day life especially around the southwest region of the United States. Our group learned many facts about these Native Americans. The whole society of the Navajo people were built around their culture. They believed in many of the resources around them were sacred and were sent from God to help them live and prosper. One of the most interesting facts we learned about the Navajo tribe culture is that they believed in the “Four Sacred Mountains” myth, which still holds belief with many Navajo Native Americans to this day. This myth says that the Navajo people were placed between 4 mountains in which they are able to perform rituals to heal their people, make medicine bundles to cure ills, and make shelters that the outsiders of the mountains could not. To this day, this myth continues to hold belief. The Navajo are big on ceremonies, traditions, and rituals that they still perform in the present to help their health and life. The Navajo people treasured nature because of how beneficial and important they were to their life. They believed that they must be in harmony with nature to be in harmony with oneself. We believe that this is relevant to our life and the world because of how important the environment and it’s resources are to us.
