Natural Selection
It has been said that natural selection occurs because of evolution. Charles Darwin British naturalists in the 1800’s and know for his evolutionary theories came out with the theory of natural selection to explain the process of evolution. Darwin defined natural selection as “principle by which each slight variation [of a trait], if useful, is preserved". According to Darwin’s theory specific characteristics give an organism a survival or reproductive advantage. An example would be, snakes evolved venom for self defense purposes. One other example would be the feathers of a peacock, the color of the feathers can give a reproductive advantage. Natural selection acts on the phenotype, or the viewable characteristics of an organism. Organisms with favorable phenotypes are more likely to survive and reproduce than those with less favorable phenotypes. By having a reproductive advantage this helps organisms the ability to mate successfully and pass on its genes to the next generation of organisms. Survival advantage helps an organism live long enough to mate successfully and pass its genes. Because of this theory organism evolve over generations; the less favorable phenotypes are long gone over the generations of evolution. The environment we live in plays a big role into natural selection. An example would be if we lived in a very hot place over generations we would develop a phenotype that would help us live in this type of environment. Darwin talks about finches beaks and how even though they are the same type of bird their beaks are different because of the environment they live in. They have all evolved different shaped beaks to adjust to their environment giving them a survival advantage.
There are six different types of selections in natural selection they are viability selection, sexual selection, survival selection, fecundity selection, gametic selection, and compatibility selection. Some people may argue with this theory but to me it... [continues]
