The weightlifting category in the games of the 30th Olympiad, more commonly known as the 2012 London Olympics is obviously, a difficult one. One needs to have the ability to endure enormous amounts of weight on their body, thus keeping their health, or as I say, their life, in danger. It is difficult to train and learn how to lift huge weights. It needs years for a person to learn how to carry huge amounts of weights on their backs. Weights that can weigh a calf, maybe several sacks of rice, or a small child. A normal person requires power to carry the weights, strength to be able to lift the weight, balance so that the weights won’t fall when they lift it into their hands, and a great skill of determination, perseverance, hardwork and faith in one’s self. Weightlifting competitions at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London were held from 28th of July to 7th of August in the ExCeL venue. Fifteen gold medals were awarded and 260 athletes took part (156 men and 104 women). Each competing nation is allowed to enter a maximum of 10 competitors, 6 men and 4 women. 2010 and 2011 World Weightlifting Championships are the main qualifying events for the 2012 Olympic Games. There are 15 events in the Weightlifting competitions, namely 56 kg Men, 62 kg Men, 69 kg Men, 77 kg Men, 85 kg Men, 94 kg Men, 105 kg Men and +105 kg Men. For the women’s events: 48 kg Women, 53 kg Women, 58 kg Women, 63 kg Women, 69 kg Women, 75 kg Women and +75 kg Women. Collar
For the competition mechanics, each lifter is allowed three attempts at the Snatch and three attempts at the Clean and Jerk. Their best lift in each is combined to determine their overall result. If an athlete fails to make a valid lift with any of their three attempts in the snatch, they are eliminated. When a tie occurs, the athlete with the lower bodyweight is declared the winner. If two athletes lift the same total weight and have the same bodyweight, the winner is the athlete who lifted the total weight first. Three referees judge the success of each Barbell attempt, indicating with either a red or a white light. Loaders are responsible for ensuring that the bar is in the right position and loaded with the correct weights. They must never touch the bar during the lift attempt. All weightlifting events prescribe the following weightlifting equipments for the competitions: Barbell- equipment Disc consisting of a steel bar and rubber-coated discs of different weights A Barbell fastened onto it. In weightlifting competitions, competitors must lift the barbell loaded to a certain weight under strictly specified conditions. In competition, the barbell’s weight is progressively Collar loaded by one-kilo increments; Collar- a metal component that encircles the bar and secures the weights in place (weighing 2.5kg each); Disc- an individual cylindrical weight on the bar. The weight of the discs ranges between 0.5kg and 25kg, symmetrically loaded on the bar in accordance with the weight requested by the athlete for his/her attempt; Sleeve- the end parts of the bar where the weights are attached; Referee Light System- the three referees give their decision about the correctness and validity of each lift by pressing white or red light buttons on a small device in front of them. As soon as a referee has judged a lift as correctly completed, he or she will press the white light button, or, if the attempt is incorrect or missed, the red light button; Main Scoreboard- the large scoreboard on the wall helps spectators to follow the progress of the competition by indicating all the important data on the lifters, the progress of the competition and the actual ranking in that particular competition (group/session); Record Board- the records relevant to the competition/championships and the category contested are displayed in the venue for information to the public.
