Metaphor: A figure of speech used to compare something physical with something intangible.

Mood: The emotions of a narrative or dramatic work.
Example #1: The mood of the story “The tell-tale heart” is suspense.
Example #2: The mood of the story “Harrison Bergeron” is dangerous and tense.

Narration: The process of telling a story.
Example #1: In the story “The tell-tale heart”, the narrator is telling what is happening.
Example #2: In the story “The possibility of evil”, the author is telling a story.

Narrative: The way in which the sequence of events in a narrative or dramatic work is ordered; they can be chronological or non-chronological.
Example #1: “The tell-tale heart” is a narrative story.
Example #2: “The day the saucers came” is a narrative poem.

Narrator: The person who tells the story.
Example #1: In the story “The tell-tale heart”, the narrator is the murderer.
Example #2: In the story “Internal monologue on a corner in Havana”, the narrator is the poor man.

Objective point of view: Author stays outside of all characters and simply reports their speech and actions. Does not include in story. Thoughts and feelings are merely suggested by the action and dialogue.
Example #1: “The lottery” by Shirley Jackson.
Example #2: “The possibility of evil” by Shirley Jackson.

Omniscient point of view: Can read the minds of all characters, can be everywhere, see everything, penetrate innermost secrets of all the characters.
Example #1: “The story of an hour” by Kate Chopin.
Example #2: “Anna Karenina” by Leo Tolstoy.

Onomatopoeia: Words that sound like what they mean.
Example #1: Buzz, buzz, buzz
Example #2: Hiss, hiss, hiss

Oxymoron: The pairing together of opposite words.
Example #1: Pretty ugly
Example #2: Cold fire
