Is Nanotechnology the Next Big Thing
What is nanotechnology? According to Wikipedia; Nanotechnology, shortened to "nanotech", is the study of the controlling of matter on an atomic and molecular scale. In general usage, any technology related to features of nanometer scale: thin films, fine particles, chemical synthesis, advanced microlithography, and so forth. A technology based on the ability to build structures to complex, atomic specifications can be termed molecular nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is the ability to measure, see, manipulate and manufacture things usually between 1 and 100 nanometers. A nanometer is one billionth of a meter; a human hair is roughly 100,000 nanometers wide. Many experts consider 100-nanometer threshold to be regard as true nanotechnology.
In 2000, President Clinton launched the U.S. National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI), the world’s first integrated national effort focused on nanotechnology. The U.S. government funding for R&D for the NNI has grown from $464 million in fiscal year 2001 to $1.49 billion in 2008.
In August 2004 Intel announced that it had built a test chip with a new process that creates faster circuits by packing 10 million transistors into a space the size of the tip of a ballpoint pen. Intel had made the first working memory chip that uses so-called 65-nanometer (nm) technology to shrink the circuits inside chips. The race was on for chip makers to design production methods that let them cram more transistors into chips, resulting in more powerful devices that cost less to make. It would seem chip manufactures are continuing to shrink its transistor size by 50 per cent every two years, keeping up with Moore's Law. Intel stepped toward delivering 32nm microprocessors in 2009. If chip manufactures continuing these trends, it will let us inexpensively buy computer systems with logic elements that are molecular in both size and precision.
