Understanding The Diet
Over the past several years, the awareness of obesity has increased. As stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in America, one-third of Americans are considered obese. Alarmed with this drastic statistic, some people are beginning to look at their diets for health improvements (“Overweight and Obesity”). Improvements include changes from white to wheat; processed to organic; regular to diet. People cut calories where they can afford, and the manufactures of the food industry recognize this. By knowing this, they manipulate advertisements, which falsely lead people to believe some products are healthy. Even though these changes improve the functioning of the body, there is question if all low calorie or diet items are beneficial.

For example, a person will buy diet soda over regular soda. This is because they are led to believe that diet is a synonym for healthy. Compared to regular soda, diet soda contains fewer sugars. Yet, diet soda contains more sodium and phosphate. When consumed in large consumptions, these are bad components to intake. On a diabetes blog, a woman discusses how these two ingredients negatively impact the body. She states, “[p]hosphate in high doses can have a negative effect on the health of your bones… sodium can cause dehydration” (N., Allison). Seeming how these ingredients increase hunger cravings, in the long run, diet soda does not benefit a healthy body.

In addition to harmful substances contained, there is an ingredient called aspartame. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that is approximately associated with ninety-two side effects. Side effects vastly range from nausea to diabetes. Janet Hull, who is the founder of the Aspartame Detox Program, states, “the compound will dissolve into solution… travel throughout the body and deposit within any tissue” (Hull).
