On the on-set of the book, the author, Stephen Brookfield in describing the attributes of the ‘skillful teacher’, immediately focused his discussion not with the teacher alone but in his/her relationship with the learners and the goal of the whole processes of teaching and learning. It is not just about the teacher and his/her skill, nor the subject and his/her methodology; it is neither just about the students, their excellence and weaknesses, nor their diversity. Although the learning context, structure and even the organization and institution and its politic create such impact to the whole works of the teacher and the learning; he still did not based his arguments on them alone The author very strongly focused his arguments on the very purpose of the act of teaching that is “to help student learn.” With this in central concern, he then explored the need of the teachers to ‘understand how students are experiencing their learning and then responding appropriately to this information.”…

Friday nights were exceedingly difficult for the staff — especially when popular movies debuted. Vanessa tried her best to accommodate the customers in an expeditious and amiable way; however, the high volume prevented her from providing the excellent service she desired to attain quality tips. Working in education has rewarded me in ways that I never expected. I am able to connect with people of all ages and from different walks of life. My life experiences and the strong mentors that guide me reinforce that this is where I am supposed to be. I am walking in my purpose. Being a part of this experience also confirms the suspicions that I sensed but could not prove as a young “brown girl.” Because I was of a different race, the daughter of immigrants, and lived in poverty, I was viewed from a deficit-based perspective. People like me were not “good test-takers” and would simply bring the average down. Unfortunately, not much has changed since then. In most places, students of color are still viewed from a deficit-based perspective.…

The school year had just started; I was walking into the classroom of one of my most difficult classes that junior year. As I enter the room I see a man who looked like a basic high school male teacher. Although he looked like many male teachers I have seen before, I was a little intimidated by the presence he gave off. As I sit down, and class begins, I realize that this average looking teacher is not the intimidating man I thought he was. On this day, I met a teacher who changed the way I look at my academic studies today. This teacher taught me to never give up on my academics and to believe in myself and everything will be okay. This teacher, or so-called average looking teacher, was my college chemistry teacher, Mr. Notsch.…

My education began in first grade in 1974. My state didn’t mandate kindergarten, so my parents didn’t send me, even though my brothers and sister went. It wasn’t easy for me, because school was the first place I ever got to interact with other people, mainly children, as an equal.…

Throughout my short teaching career so far I’ve had the privilege of knowing a few unique students. Let me introduce you to two: John, for example, is rarely on task except if it involves drawing. He is perpetually staring into space or asking me questions that I have literally just answered for the whole class. Poor John is lost more often than not, but if hand unfortunately this is clearly reflected in his grades. Nathan has been another one of my problem children this year. He is extremely bright which makes it even more sad that he wastes all of his energy causing drama in the classroom. I have a hunch that life at home for Nathan is quite theatrical. Between his brothers in a gang and single mother ignoring him for her boyfriend of the week, no one can truly blame the child for wanting to feel normal. Nathan’s way to cope is to bring his sense of “normalcy” into school. This makes it hard for other students to work with him always pushing his way into their business.…

Since this is my first semester started my graduate course, before that I did not learn academic language class or education class expertise. The Professor’s teaching process through this semester, I also experienced how the educational methods used in the classroom with this course. These learning, the diversity and richness of the educational methods I have a new understanding. However, at the same time, I also realized that my own knowledge system is still very imperfect and incomplete. I still need to learn more knowledge to support my knowledge systems. Through the course of the study, inspired my strong interest in language education. I think the design and organization of a lesson is very interesting, of course, is still a very difficult thing. Based on a certain understanding of these knowledge and learning, I think I will be more willing to spend more time thinking about how to be a teacher. I also realize that good communication is an important way to establish a good relationship between teachers and students. I will invest more in my education experience, enthusiasm and thinking.…
