My Summer Vacation
In the summer of "˜99 I had the chance to visit a friend that lives in Sao Paulo, Brazil. My friend from Brazil, Ana Radeau, had come to my town the previous summer and spent a semester at my high school. I had no idea of what to expect when I got there because Brazil is such a diverse country with the rainforest, along hundreds of miles of beach, and also with some of the biggest cities in the world, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. But the picture I had in my mind was completely different from what I saw.

On the flight there I was with another friend from my town; and also Ana was with us because she had come back to our town to visit everyone for three weeks and was returning home. During the twelve hour flight there Ana was explaining different things of what to expect when we got there. Also she explained to us about her maids and how we did not have to do anything around the house and that they would wash our clothes, make our beds, and cook every meal for us.

When we arrived in Sao Paulo we were picked up in a white limo and driven about an hour to where Ana lives. While driving through the second largest city in the world, Sao Paulo, I was shocked to see thousands of shacks that belonged to so many poor people. Brazil was nothing like I expected; there were barely any trees and the pollution was so bad that I didn't even want to open my window. I was so shocked to see the horrible conditions that those people had to live in.

The town that my friend lives in, Alpha Ville, is one of the richest towns in Brazil and all the houses were huge mansions. It was weird driving through the poorest part the of the world one minute and then the next minute looking at hundreds of mansions that belonged to some of the richest people in Brazil.

During the course of the two weeks that I was in Brazil lots of weird things happened. For example one of the days I went to school with Ana and it was really boring because I do not

Brazil is a vast country rich in natural resources and beauty in the continent of South America. Located in the east-central coast of South America, it is the largest country in South America occupying nearly half the continent. Brazil’s topography is vast with its most priceless treasures inarguably being the Amazon Rain Forest. The Amazon River and its components attribute to two fifths of the country with the Amazon Basin making up 40% of the continent of South America (“Brazil”, n.d.). The Portuguese settlers were the first to arrive in Brazil and quickly found they were not alone, discovering the many tribes of natives that called Brazil their home for hundreds and maybe even thousands of years. These Portuguese settlers were not determined to conquer as the Spaniards, but were poor sailors who were seeking items for trade. This made it easy for the settlers to intermarry with the natives as well as the slaves they had brought from Africa, creating the mix of races known in Brazil today (Geographia, 2006). The Portuguese were not the only ones to seek Brazil to escape their situation and they were quickly joined by many immigrants such as French, Dutch, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, African and Arab, with Portuguese remaining the dominant and official language of Brazil. These cultures have blended into one…

The immense growth of favelas, meaning shanty towns, in Sao Paulo throughout approximately the last 40 years, almost doubling in quantity, gives evidence to the growth of poverty. The population of people living in favelas was estimated to be around 2 million in the late 1990’s. A more recent census report from 2007 showed that the number of shanties within the favelas went from 14,504 to 377,236 since…

Brazil is one of the most visited place in the world and also one of the most diverse countries in the world. More than 75millon people of African decent live in Brazil, this makes it the second largest black population in the world. Its attracts a large number of people because of it architecture, slums and rainforest. Brazil is contradictory because its was the last country to abolish slavery but also the first to claim that it was a racial democracy. Most people might not know that Brazil has its racial problems and that it has been going on for a long time. Brazilian race relations and conceptions of race are somewhat different from the United States. In Brazil most African descendents are people live in slums called the favelas. The favelas are small over-crowded communities, which are built on hills. One of the largest is in a city called Rio de Janeiro and it’s full of hundreds of poor urban people.…

Brazil’s population also plays an important aspect in the international arena; it ranks fifth in the world in terms of its population with over 186 million people. Slavery was abolished in 1888, which over time a further blurred racial lines; Brazil is a mixture of races and ethnicities, resulting in rich diversity. Approximately 80% of its population is Roman Catholic. Despite the mixing of ethnicities; there is a class system in Brazil. Thus, there is a great disparity in wage differentials--and therefore lifestyle and social aspirations among the different classes (Brazilian Culture, Family, and Its Ethnic-Cultural Variety, 193). On the other hand, Brazil’s current economic situation is at its best. Today most of the world is consumed in debt and dealing with high levels of unemployment; Brazil instead is trying to see how to manage its economic boom. It was the last country to enter the great recession…

My feet felt like they were walking on quicksand as I was walking down the hallway to the hatch. My nerves were bouncing off the walls. I have never been out of the country before, let alone with a bunch of strangers. The plane ride felt like it was so short because I didn’t know what my eyes would foresee when I landed. I was heading toward a country with one of the worst devastating earthquakes recorded, Haiti! The opportunity came to me when my church was signing up people for Mission of Hope to take a trip to Haiti on June 2012. They told us a couple of things that we would experience and do while on the trip. Nothing prepared me though for what I would see with my own eyes. Since our flights were running late I didn’t land in Haiti till dark. A bus came to transport my group to our camp site. Even in the dark misty fog you could see there were not many buildings. All you could see was outlines of tents and piles of rubbish. When my group arrived to the camp site we were shown our assigned rooms and instructed to get some sleep because tomorrow was going to be a busy day.…

In the Brazilian community, a great rural to urban migration in the 1940s to 1970s was one of the reasons for the rise in favelas. Most favelas have drug Lords who run gangs that openly sell drugs. Although these favelas may have some "bad guys," most favela residents are people who have honest jobs and work hard for their money. Most of the favelas upper class are…

Surrounding the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo are small towns with houses made out of thin plywood, plastic, cardboard, and very thin sheet metals. These small towns that surround urban areas have the word “shantytowns” or favelas popularly associated with them. These towns are mostly populated with the Brazilian population of African origin. The people that occupy these areas were drawn to the areas due to rural drought as well as local government corruption. These towns as well as the urban areas that are surrounded by them are commonly associated with violent crime.…

Here lies, basically, the situation of the arts in Brazil before the world: until now, only lies drawn up as truths (formal exoticisms that vulgarize social problems) have been conveyed in quantity, producing a series of errors not limited to Art, but that contaminate, above all, the terrain of politics. The European observer is only interested in artistic creation from the underdeveloped world to the extent that it satisfies his nostalgia for primitivism; and this primitivism is hybrid, dressed up as late legacies from the civilized world, misunderstood because imposed by colonialist conditioning.…

This film show how much different the Brazilian culture is from the United States. The cities in the movie seem to be very crowded and underdeveloped. None of the people owned cars and they all needed to take the train to and from where ever they were going. In the train it also show the great diversity of the people in Brazil. Dora was very excited to finally get a new T.V. and that was probably her most valuable possession. This shows that the middle class is still very poor and they do not have a very high standard of living in Brazil. Also it is very intriguing that most of the population is illiterate and they have to get some one to read and write letters for them. A final thing that this film shows about Brazil is its massive size. Throughout the entire movie Dora and Josué are traveling to the area that his father is supposed to live in, which takes them days and they are only traveling across a very small portion of the…
