EDD489 Philosophy of Education Statement

Write your philosophy of education statement. First, answer the questions below. Then compile the questions as one continuous document (non-question format). The philosophy should be written in a concise and coherent manner. It should be easy to read and understand.

Teaching is very important because this is how knowledge is transferred, whether it is a brown bear cub that is being shown how to catch a salmon, or a son having a moment with his father who is modeling fatherhood, or displaying protection of the family unit. Learning is even more important because if learning is not received there can be a major lost of earning, lost of life, a family placed in harm’s way because what was taught was not learnt the entire family can be marooned in the life situations that can come about.

My dominant teaching style is a combination of two styles, Facilitator and a Delegator however from time to time I will add other styles to bring out other types of learners. By providing information the student will display how he/she works, how instructions are carried out or not.

The teaching strategies that I naturally gravitate toward are the following: discussion, questioning and stimulations. This informal method tends to reveal how a student is processing information and his knowledge of the subject.

The two philosophers that have resonated with me were Socrates 469-369b.c. One of his theories was that “the human mind was like a blank slate at birth, and great influences were as a result of life experiences”. The second philosopher that I believe has influenced my teaching is John Locke 1630-1704 and one of his theories was “we assist persons in learning by probing questions” which calls on persons to think before answering rather than the common swallow and regurgitating method employed by too many persons
