My personal essay with GEMS (Gilbert Education & Management Systems)

My essay will include me talking about my reason for seeking a college degree in Emergency and Disaster Management and why I chose to do it online vs. in a classroom. This essay will also include my learning style and why it works best for me, followed by a few examples to help support my learning style. I’ll also be talking about my grand type and my work preference indicator (WPI) as described by the Gilbert Education & Management Systems (GEMS) essay. There’s a ton of reasons why people choose to further their education but mine is quite simple. It was because of my daughter. After I graduated high school in Germany, I never thought about attending college. I was almost 17 when I graduated and I loved not being in school anymore. For me it was all about going out and having a good time. I didn’t have a care in the world, until I got pregnant at the age of 20. While I was pregnant I reflected back on my life a lot and what I have to offer her. Even after the birth of my daughter it took me a long time to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. I knew if I were to pursue a college education not only would my parents be proud of me but I would also be a great role model to my daughter. With the economy as bad as it is, you have to have a college degree in order to get a good job. Thanks to my husband he helped me figure everything out, including what I’m majoring in. Emergency and Disaster Management is not a common career plan but I chose this because of the 9/11 tragedy, hurricane Katrina and the Sri Lanka tsunami. Every one of those disasters left me baffled. Instead of sitting there and crying, I wanted to help. I felt as if it was my duty to do something to help those people in need but because of certain circumstances I couldn’t do

Before 9/11, emergency management focused on natural disaster mitigation and recovery. So training was based on experience and mentorship. However, the 9/11incident fundamentally changed the culture of emergency management. The paradigm shift now requires a unified response, which in turn required an academic approach to disaster management.…

Why go to college? Why would someone spend thousands of dollars to sit in yet another classroom? My uncle says “people that get a degree make over a million dollars more in a lifetime.” My dad counters that with “the world needs ditch diggers too.” I came to college to start my life, to become an independent man who finds his niche among society. I suppose some people can do that outside of school but I find college to be an optimum transition to the adult life as it teaches practical skills, instills a greater appreciation of the world, and makes one discontent with inequities in the community.…

Today many more students are graduating from high school and heading straight to college rather than graduating and heading straight to the working field, but why? One question that has resonated in my mind since high school is why exactly do we go to college? For my final project, I plan to gather research and analyze the real reasons why students go to college as well as why students decided to attend Northern Kentucky University rather than any other college. I picked this topic of analyzing how social influence plays a role in making a major life decision (such as going to college) because it is very applicable to my life as well as the rest of students. Also, I am extremely interested in understanding more about the pressures society has placed on my generation today to go to college; I know I definitely felt these societal pressures when planning to attend college. I also was extremely hesitant and resistant when it came to deciding to attend Northern Kentucky University. Obviously something persuaded me to attend college (beyond my own desire to further my education) and specifically attend Northern Kentucky University, or else I wouldn’t be here typing this proposal today.…

The main reason why people go to college is not because they want to but because they have to. Most high school seniors are pressured by their guidance counselors and parents to go to college because it is “the right thing to do.” In the essay that Caroline Bird wrote “College is a Waste of Time and Money”, she states that students go to college because.” Mother wanted them to go, or some other reason entirely irrelevant to the course of studies for which college is supposedly organized." The student may have different ideas about what he or she wants to do in life, but because they think that these “mentors” know what is best for them, they probably end up doing something they do not want to do, resulting in being miserable and resentful.…

Here I sat as an older retiree and this is how I decided to enhance my career path. My essay is about my personality traits and learning abilities. With the Carolyn’s Kalil’s survey, this survey portrayed how my work ethic and abilities will affect any management practice I will use (Carolyn’s Kalil’s 1). As for my learning abilities, well let us say I am definitely a hands’ on person. The survey states that I am courageous. Well without breaking my arm, I think I am. The survey also states that I act on a moment 's notice; well this is defiantly true, especially with my experience in the military. We never have a chance to think about anything during the moment, we just acted on it (Carolyn’s Kalil’s 1).…

Life is full of obstacles which starts out on an easy level but only becomes harder the further on down. Because of the obstacle turning meticulous, people eventually crave to attend college to pursue an education; young adult, middle aged, or over middle aged adults. The reason people are inspired to attend college is that the job industries are wanting people with degrees over people with hands-on- skills. The job industries feel that people with college degrees are more likely to make the job industry flourish more than people who have not attended college but know…

The reason why I'm in college is because I want a better future for myself and to show my family that I can become somebody one day. Sometimes I would say to myself like “why am I even here? This place is not the place for me “. In other words college is not for everybody because not everyone who lives with their parents who can afford for tuition for college. But for me I realize that staying alone and not doing nothing for me was the biggest mistake I ever made as young adult at the age of nineteen. Soon as I turn 20 I decided that it was time for me to do something that’s going to be right for myself which was working and going to college. The first day of me attending college was amazing meeting new people and getting to know others such as colleagues.…
