This is a narrative essay that I wrote for my english class. Please excuse the formatting, this is a copy that was saved from a computer crash and I haven't had time to reformat it. This is a story of my daughter's birth.
My Journey with the Sun
“Hmmm… ok, ok,” I said out loud. I rolled to my side, pushed myself up, and stood on my feet.”Oh, gravity.” I had to pee again, but something felt different. Bleary eyed, I slowly waddled to the bathroom. When I sat down, I knew. Today was the day. The sun was just making its appearance above the horizon, so I decided to lie back down and let my husband get more sleep. I knew we would both need it.
I soon realized there would be no more sleep for me. I was contracting at seven minute intervals, paying close attention to my body and what it was telling me. I couldn’t help but open my eyes and look again at the bedside alarm clock with each new contraction. About an hour later, I woke up my husband and told him I thought I was in labor. He was excited and alert, which was definitely a far cry from his normal morning routine. We sat in bed and talked excitedly about all the things we had planned for this day. For nine months, we had been dreaming about it, and now the birth of our daughter was becoming real. I called the midwife, and after speaking with me for a short while, she agreed with me that I was probably in labor. She told me that she would meet me there at the clinic if I was indeed in labor.
As the sun continued its climb into the sky, my husband and I began cleaning up the house and packing bags for the hospital trip. We made sure that everything was ready for the new baby’s arrival home, and then I took a few moments to prepare myself. I carefully braided my hair, removed my jewelry, and then spent a few minutes admiring my enormous belly, knowing it would be deflated the next time I saw it in that mirror.
