My Idol in My Life
The person affects my life the most, and also my only idol, my goal of living is my grandma. In the time when most Asian women did not dare to express themselves, to speak out what was on their mind, my grandmother did. Her rare personality was popular and highly respected among those who knew her. At that time women would not have good education, however everybody would turn to my grandmother’s wisdom to ask for help. She was smart and profound but yet vigorously caring and loving towards her family, relatives and friends. I was her favorite grandchildren, and as I got to stay with her the longest my childhood was actually full of her love and teachings. Whenever I feel down and helpless with my life, my grandmother has always been my motivation to get up and fight.

My grandmother grew up in a middle class family, not wealthy but still considered intelligentsia. Her grandfather was a general in the last Vietnamese dynasty but the following generation was a downturn. Women at that time were not allowed to go to school; the only education they could get was from their own family. My grandmother managed to learn how to write and read, do simple mathematics and poetry mostly by herself because she was aware of the importance of being educated. However her wisdom came from all the ups and downs she had gone through in life, the downfall of her family, the gambler and unfaithful husband and the death of one of her two sons. She had been through all the obstacles and deprivations that could ever happen to a woman, and she still stood strong and helped her family keep moving on. If it had not been to her sharp decision where to go, and what to do my family would not survive the Vietnam War. She parted her kindred into small groups and sent each to different locations so that even one group should get in danger the others had the option to run away in time. It has never been easy to keep such a large family in peace, when my grandfather had two wives, and eleven

This sacrifice taught me that sometimes in life we as people have to make very challenging choices in order to receive the best long term results. Growing up, she always reminded me to think for the future and not just in the now. She has also taught me to become independent. By being forced to be a mother figure at the young age of 17, she had to learn how to everything on her own, raise 10 children, and take care of her ill father. This is the reason why I always try my hardest to get the best out of life. I feel that I should always take advantage of every great opportunity. If my grandmother could accomplish so much throughout…

Each one of us had had that one person in our lives who changed our lives; that person without whom we could never have achieved all the things we have achieved. This is the person in our life who teaches us, how to tell the difference between right and wrong, make better life decisions, and get on the path of righteousness. Some might find that person in the form of their friends, parents, life partners and some might put God in place of that person. For me, my mother has been the most important person in my life. She helped me take all the good decisions in life, supported me in times of misery, celebrated with me in times of happiness and was always by my side. I found a good friend, a great mentor and a knowledgeable teacher in my mother.…

A person who has had a significant influence on me in my life would have to be my former foster mother, Miss Barbara Pratt. Ms. Pratt was a foster mother to many children before myself and she had had wonderful success with most of them. I had been in an extremely abusive relatives home before I had been placed in Ms. Pratt’s home. When it was discovered that I was in an abusive home I was first placed in a group home in Cincinnati. Social Services worked very hard to find me a home that would help me adjust to a ‘normal’ life as quickly and easily as possible. They found the home my older sister had been placed in, they contacted Ms. Pratt and I was placed in her care.…

For my grandma, her call to adventure wasn’t a normal one. She was faced with the huge problem of being born in the midst of a war. But as she began to grow older, my grandma began to realize the other major problems she would be facing. Having to find enough food to eat, worrying about whether or the enemy was going to strike, and even thinking about the radical fighters that would go after her first because she was a girl. “My journey began when I got old enough and realized all the hardships I would be facing”. Someone who helped my grandma through all of these hard times was her mother. My great-grandmother played the mentor position and helped prepare my grandma for all the hard times she would face. She would always tell my grandma to work hard and stand up for herself, and that life would one day get a lot better. These words prepared my grandma for the hard times she would face in the…

This is a hard choice, but I think I have to go with Helen Keller. Even though she was blind, deaf, and had a hard time speaking, she influenced and helped many people throughout her lifetime. She broke through her disabilities, and worked hard to make it through school, it was hard but she didn’t give up, ever. She loved to read and write, just like me, she also loved to help others and learn, also like me. We all face hard times, and Helen understood that, so she helped others get through theirs. Instead of pitying herself. Helen inspired me to work hard and never give up no matter what. That is why Helen Keller is my hero.…
