I come from a small school but a big city. I grew up in Inglewood a city in the county of Los Angeles. I am the fourth out of five children. Just like me my older siblings have gone to college it was expected of me to go. The night before I left I felt over whelmed I was going to a state I had never been to before. I had no idea how the people where or if I was even going to like it. I had just seen the school through a computer screen. Luckily I had another friend with me, if it wasn’t for Michele I don’t know how I would do it all alone. In this semester I have came to the conclusion that college does not determine your future; it is a tool used to help me find my passions and set future goals. Moving on, I choose Hanover College because I wanted to try something knew. Two of my older siblings go to a private liberal arts school and they love. Hanover was one of the few liberal arts school’s that accepted me. I loved that the school was small, and in the countryside. I have always lived in the city and I though this would also be a great opportunity to explore other states and so I began my journey to Hanover College. It was a Friday evening when I arrived to Louisville and Michele was waiting for me. We took a taking to Hanover, I thought in my head what am I doing with all of these con fields. My first memory of Hanover College is having the taxi drop us off in the middle of a parking lot. I had no idea what to do, and I thought to myself this is going to be a horrible semester. Luckily there were some senior moving in that helped us. This first semester I have learned a lot about myself. At first I wanted to become a Spanish teacher but just because it was the easy way out. I knew Spanish and Being a part of the Spanish clubbed helped me learn about the small amount of Hispanics in towns where the majority is white. In the city where I live here are

In today’s world, a college education is the cornerstone of life. Obtaining a college degree opens many doors of opportunity. These building blocks of opportunity will help shape who I am as a person. I am building a future, striving for success, and always looking to better myself. Abraham Lincoln once said “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.” I have been haunted by similar words, in my own head, for quite some time. I never finished college, yet I love to learn. I have always dreamed of completing college, owning a company, or working in an office. Now, given the opportunity, completing this degree will become my greatest achievement. Until now, I have always felt that I let myself down. I’ve always had the best intentions, but life’s unexpectedness put several roadblocks in the way of me completing a degree. I graduated high school twenty-five years ago. Since then, I have raised a family and have unfulfilling employment. Being able to attend college and complete this degree which I am embarking upon is important to me because I have matured into the person I want to be.…

When I think of college, I think of self-improvement. The years that I will spend pursuing a degree will be a time of personal development. I will progress in various areas of my life, such as interpersonally, socially, and mentally. A new state, new friends, and new environment, are numerous reasons for why I want to attend college. However, one of the dominant reasons for me wanting to further my education is the “knowledge”. College is the next step in education as well as one’s maturity. I will be leaving home and going to a different state to start a new educational journey. I look forward to being away from my parents; not because I think they are not cool, but because I want to become independent. I believe that up until this point my parents have protected me and provided me with astounding wisdom. Now it is time to implement all they have taught me in my life. I will be on my own, and will make my choices based on the foundation of values and morals my parents have instilled in me.…

    El Salvador Narrative

Coming from there, I found my world had been shattered and I had to start from scratch. I found that everything I knew had now been split into three. My life at home was rigorous and hard. My mother’s expectations of me were harsh but I thank her because without her regulations, my life at school would have been different. Maybe without her given structure of my life early on, I wouldn't have risen to become valedictorian of my school. Even though I did all the work and put in all the hours on my own free will, her expectations and my fear of letting them down motivated me when I felt like I reach “good enough”. Thanks to that, I found that life at school was relatively smooth and I was able to do well. I found that hard work can bring good fortunes so it’s always worth it to put in the time. At long last, I found that doing well at school, I was able to keep and create healthy relationships with people my age. I made friends and was no longer the lonely kid in the corner. I had people I could act the way I wanted to be. The realization that all my three worlds are interconnected is no surprise. I mean, they all came from the same place that I came from. From the violent towns of El Salvador. From my past. But enough about the past. My high school life is coming to an end. This upcoming Saturday, I graduate and life will again be changing. I will no longer have to live in that white blue house. I will have to say goodbye to Arrowhead. I will have to make new friends. College is coming and while I am completely excited for it, I do feel sorrow for leaving them. But it’s not really leaving them because nothing is forever. Unlike like my college memoir class, this is not the end. This is just the start of a new phase in my…

This college essay truly shows that I’ve made it this far and that nothing will stop me from going after my dreams. Now I look at the little freshman and look back on what I have accomplished during my four years of high school even with the obstacles that got in my way. I was able to get into the NHS, become a senior ambassador, and get my first job. Throughout all this my background and remembering what my parents taught me helped me stay strong and dedicated to what I was doing. So to any other person that reads this, I have a word of advice… “Don't think of yourself any less than you are and don't ever let the things around you change who you are at…
