My Computer Ate my Homework
“Beep, beep, beep.” It was 7:30am on Tuesday November 1, 2005. The sound of the
alarm had just given me the signal it was time to start the day. As I laid in bed taking in a
couple of extra minutes to prepare for the day, I was totally unaware of the stress the day was
about to put upon me. After about five minutes, I gathered myself and managed to get out of
bed.
This was the due date for the argumentative paper for my English class. I had been
working on this particular project for approximately a month. Because my weekend was long, I
worked twelve hours on Saturday and Sunday, my birthday was on Saturday and Halloween was
on Monday, I had taken the effort to finish my paper early. All that was left to do to my paper on
Tuesday was save a copy to a CD and print out the final copy. Nothing that would take more
than ten minutes, so I thought.
I walked out into the dining room and sat down at the computer. I opened up Word
Perfect to retrieve my paper, and to my surprise a message appeared on the screen, “File
Corrupted .” What does this mean, I thought. I knew it had to be something bad. I instantly
felt as though someone had punched me in the stomach. I had spent more than a month working
on this paper, and I had completely revised the paper from the draft. All I could do was cry. I
tried everything from opening all files that I thought might contain my lost paper to shutting down the computer and restarting it. Nothing seemed to work. I picked up the phone and called
my husband at work. When he answered he knew something was wrong. Since I have very little
knowledge of computers, he left work early to come home and search through the computer filed
to try to find my paper. All I kept thinking was, why didn’t I save a copy to a CD? I guess I just
didn’t think anything like... [continues]
