The Downloader: Fan or Opponent
Music, the art form of sound. It can be physically dated back to 7000 BC. Being solely based on live performances for the vast majority of its existence, the advent of recording has changed how we listen to music. A recording of music was able to be listened to without the need for a live concert, prompting musicians to record and sell their music. Recordable music is subject to society’s current form of media, and today’s media of choice is the internet. Like it or not, we all live in a new age of human history, the Age of Information. The conception of the internet has transformed the way we communicate, gain and pass on knowledge, and even the way we trade as consumers and producers. In today’s society, information that was previously unavailable to the average person can be attained instantly, from anywhere, at the will of the individual. Through the web, music can be recorded as a code of information, an MP3 for example, sent across the world as information, and decoded, through an MP3 player, to form the same music for listeners throughout the world. This has shifted the mindset of our society; an entire generation is a great deal less patient than its predecessor. The staggering increase in music demand can be directly linked to this change in society. Despite the plummet of record sales, music is being consumed more rapidly than ever before. Because the music industry has struggled to implement ways to provide their music to the people with the ease that it is demanded, piracy has prevailed, allowing consumers to navigate around the inefficient, outdated methods that consumers are legally expected to take. The newspaper industry is another example of the required transition of the mindset and methods of media companies in order to maintain their well being.
