Once upon a time there was a cherry blossom tree, and spring was just starting. All of the trees around her started to grow beautiful flowers, and so did she. As the weather became warmer, more flowers grew all over her branches, until she became the most beautiful cherry blossom in her park.

One day though, she looked around and noticed the ground was littered with something. As the wind blew the soft pink petals up around her trunk, she saw, horrified, the petals of the trees around her littering the ground. Panicked, she held her flowers, holding stiff with every breeze, not relaxing a single bit in the beautiful weather. The trees around her, that were much older and had gone through many years of flowers falling off, relaxed, and lost all of their petals, slowly drifting off into a peaceful rest, as green leaves spread all over their branches. But the one cherry blossom refused to rest, instead having her bark grow gnarled as she refused to relax.
A strong breeze blew through her branches one day. Though she tried as hard as she could her petals began to blow off in the wind. As they fell one by one, she felt how much lighter her branches were, and realized how tired she had become.
The tree began to relax more and more, as her petals fell off in great pink clouds that blew through her park. When the last petal fell, she relaxed completely, and finally rested as green leaves spread through her

The scent of flowers carried strong over the valley. The overwhelming perfume of hundreds, if not thousands of untouched petals, was long lost to noses that grew up with roses in their nostrils, not able to pick out the aroma of a single stem. Not helping was the deepness of the valley, with the only way out a steep climb with materials they not only didn’t have, but had no hope of ever making.…

At that moment, the bird began to flutter. It tumbled down through the bleeding tree and landed at our feet with a thud. In the beginning of the novel Basho describes his decision to take the journey “to the deep north,” and uses nature to convey his worries and thoughts about straying away from home- “I felt uncertain, wondering whether I would see again the cherry blossoms on the boughs at Ueno and Yanaka.” Basho is using the cherry blossoms as a symbolic image to depict the disturbance he is feeling about leaving. In questioning that he may not see the cherry blossoms (a Japanese flower that only blossoms for a short period of time) again, he is referring to the way their splendor and beauty is only there for a time and is gone within only a short period. One can infer that Basho is suggesting that with the uncertainties, which lay ahead, he may not return home for life’s beauty can be taken away in just a moment, like the cherry blossoms. This sentiment can be portrayed in numerous other ways as well. The blossoms can also be used as a metaphor for his village in a sense that the brilliance…
