Unit 3: Facebook vs. Twitter Case Study Analysis

Introduction
Facebook and Twitter are two of the most visited social networking sites among youth and adults alike. Much like their predecessors LinkedIn and MySpace, Facebook and Twitters main goal is to keep people connected via the World Wide Web. Both companies have worked very hard to provide user friendly sites for its visitors; some of the changes made worked out better than others. In the following paragraphs, the two companies will be compared and contrasted. Issues with each company will be addressed as well as suggested solutions to potential problems.
Synopsis of the Situation
In February 2004, Facebook was created by previous Harvard student Mark Zuckerburg. It began as a social networking site for 30,000+ colleges but has grown in popularity since it became available to anyone with an internet connection (Yadav, 2006, para. 1). As of 2010, Facebook has an estimated 150 million users. Of course, two years has passed by so it’s safe to say that figure has grown exponentially. One of Facebooks biggest competitors, Twitter, is a social media site that came on the scene in March 2006 (ProfileRehab, 2010) and in four short years, has accumulated a follower base of 6 million and growing.
Key Issues
At one time, Facebooks biggest worry was MySpace (which I can honestly say I have NEVER visited) but now that twitter has tried taking the stage, it’s time for Facebook to come up with some new and exciting ideas to keep their current users. Facebook wants to stay ‘fresh and new’ for its users and realizing that Twitter offers a new fresh service to its followers is a real threat.
