INTRODUCTION

In this write up I provide a narrative account on my entry, engagement and experience in the field of counseling while in the course of executing my work. I introduce the organization where counseling engagement took place, by firstly giving brief background information to the organization’s existence, issues that the organization is grappling with, focus areas and the context in which the organization is operating. Secondly, the narrative further highlights the social and cultural issues that are impacting on people’s lives and that have a bearing on counseling by drawing on a case study which was handled by the author. With little knowledge on the practice of counseling, the entry and engagement in the field of counseling was quite challenging and interesting because of the overwhelming nature of cases that are dealt with in counseling.

ENGAGING IN NEW CONTEXT AND CHECKING IN

My first encounter in the field of counseling started through an engagement with an organization called Youth Net and Counseling (YONECO) where I am currently working as a Project Officer. The organization was formed in 1997, and its vision is to ‘create a self-reliant HIV/AIDS free society that respects democratic values and principles’. The organization has the following objectives that it wants to achieve; promote positive youths, women and child development through such interventions as counseling, life skills, leadership and entrepreneurship development, safeguard, promote and protect human rights with particular reference to the rights of youths, women and children, to promote socio and economic support services for abused and victimized women and children at community level and to provide care and support to those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS including people living with HIV and orphans. The context in which the organization was formed and operates is a dynamic and complex. The critical social issue at the time of its formation was HIV/AIDS scourge that impacted heavily on the social fabric as evidenced by an unprecedented number of orphans resulting in increased number of street kids in the major cities of the country. HIV/AIDS has also disrupted the normal functioning of the society in the past decade. The country witnessed loss of sense of collectivism among family members with the extended families too overwhelmed to support children of their departed relatives. Such disruption on the traditional way of living gave rise to many orphaned children who had no permanent place of abode who were mongering around as street kids. Organized by young people, the organization started as a movement by a group of volunteers who saw the need to address the problem of street kids which had become a common site at that particular time. The organization has grown to become one of the key partners in supporting vulnerable groups in many development aspects such as counseling. Meanwhile, YONECO focusses on the following areas; youth development, women and children and governance and human rights and Advocacy, Networking and Media Relations. In its pursuit to reach out more people, the organization pioneered the first ever child helpline in the country known as Tithandizane Child Helpline. In recognition of this in 2010, the government of Malawi mandated YONECO as a secretariat for the...
