HES 2330 Thermodynamics 1 Semester 1 – 2013 ASSIGNMENT 2 Due Date: 29 May 2013, 5.00 PM Dropbox: Mailbox 83 (HES2330/HES4330) – Level 8, ATC Building 1. A container filled with 45 kg of liquid water at 95oC is placed in a 90-m3 room that is initially at 12oC. The thermal equilibrium is established after a while as a result of heat transfer between the water and the air in the room. Using constant specific heats, determine (a) the final equilibrium temperature, (b) the amount of heat transfer between the water and the air in the room, and (c) the entropy generation. Assume the room is well sealed and heavily insulated. 2. An ideal Otto cycle has a compression ratio of 9.2 and uses air as the working fluid. At the beginning of the compression process, air is at 98 kPa and 27oC. The pressure is doubled during the constant-volume heat-addition process. Accounting for the variation of specific heats with temperature, determine (a) the amount of heat transferred to the air, (b) the net work output, (c) the thermal efficiency, and (d) the mean effective pressure for the cycle. 3. A gas turbine power plant uses solar energy as the source of heat addition (see Figure for detailed setup and operating data). Modelling the cycle as a Brayton cycle and assuming no pressure drops in the heat exchanger or interconnecting piping, determine: (a) the thermal efficiency; (b) the air mass flow rate, in kg/s, for a net power output of 500kW.…

Today, there are many dreams and traditions that Americas hold. Some of them can be reached, some cannot. Some Americans dream of riches, some dream of curing diseases. Most of their dreams are from the heart. People dream of having a family, with healthy kids. The American dream is really simple to me. It’s having a family, house, job, and one or more cars. Today in society, people have different perspectives on what the “American Dream” is. People worry more about how the economy is doing than how their families are doing. Maybe somebody dreams about being a big sports star, or getting rich quick. Maybe somebody dreams about singing for a living, and making an enormous amount of money. Another common “American Dream” is that you could win millions off the lottery, or gambling. Cities like Los Vegas have been made just for gambling, for people who think that they can get rich quick. Some American’s lose a lot of money and end up being hurt by that dream. Some lose all their money, their houses, and a lot of possessions from gambling. Each one of us many Americans may as well have different perspectives on the “American Dream”, seeing as we are all different. Another part of the “American Dream” would be tradition. Like Christmas, for example. People all over the world celebrate this; it’s even a national holiday. But not everybody is Christian, or believes in Jesus.…

As a 74-year-old retired teacher in San Pablo of California, Roberta Tim Quan said that during their working years, she and her husband saved money and paid tax, but their retirement planning of travel and family visits cannot come true. As Quan recounted to a congressional hearing last fall, her husband needed expensive medical care for Alzheimer's disease. Utility and food bills were on the rise, as well. She cannot afford their retirement plans anymore (Billitteri 2008). In the U.S., for retirees their situations after retirement are not as good as thirty years ago. During a long period of working, workers paid their responsibility into social security account; however, after retirement, they cannot afford to live. That is not fair. Social security has supported retirees, widows and disabled individuals with a trust income for almost seventy years. However, the social security system's pay-as-you-go funding will be overwhelmed by the retirement of millions of baby-boom workers in the next fifteen years. Recently, a lot of people argue that social security should be privatized, and people can get money from that account after retirement.…

Hello my name is Grant Heisinger and I am 17 years old. I live with my mom Rita Heisinger and Kriss Heisinger. My older brother Garrett Heisinger attends San Francisco State University. We moved to California in 1999. We built a house out in the country part of elk grove, but when my dads business started sinking we then moved into a gated community just five minutes away from the old house. My father’s side of the family is German, and my mom’s side of the family is Hispanic and Irish. I enjoy being around my mom’s side more; they are always just full of energy and always happy. I love being around the house, my family is always joking around with each other and having a good time. I believe that God made us this way. God has set up my family to be successful and set us around caring and loving people. My mom is a first grade teacher so she is great with kids, that’s why I feel like she is the one who made me who I am today. She was always there for me and always told me to treat people with respect. My dad has made me who I am in sports. He has always been there pushing me to be the best I can be. There was an event that happened in our lives where we realized that live every day like its your last, because you never know when your time will come. My best friend past away and it was out of no where. The way I am living my life right now I will be a successful man someday with a beautiful wife and two children.…

Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial human development is one of the best known theories (Cherry, 2011). Erikson’s theory explains eight stages of human development, and in each stage an individual experiences a series of challenges and lessons. The eight stages of development includes infancy, early childhood, play age, school age, adolescence, early, middle, and late adulthood. A strong case can be made for each stage for why it is the most important stage in a person’s life but I believe early adulthood is the most important stage. In early adulthood, individuals develop into who they are and what they want to become. This paper will include the primary aspects of early adulthood, along with the cognitive, physical, and personality development. This paper will also include health, biological, and transition factors.…
