What the is story about
Who Moved My Cheese? is a story about change and how we can react or fail to react to the changes in our lives. Change can be a good thing if we are observant, can anticipate change, and prepare ourselves to react quickly to changes. Change can also be a very traumatic experience if we are caught by surprise and fail to react because we are either too comfortable with our current situation, or we allow fear to keep us from reacting to the change.
The characters in the story are two mice, Sniff and Scurry, and two little people, Hem and Haw. According to Johnson (1998), Sniff, Scurry, Hem, and Haw “are intended to represent the simple and the complex parts of ourselves, regardless of our age, gender, race, or nationality” (p. 12).
In his preface to the book, Blanchard (1998), explains that “Cheese is a metaphor for what we want in life” (p. 14). He goes on to explain that “we all have our own idea of what Cheese is, and we pursue it because we believe that it makes us happy. When we get it, we become attached to it and if we lose it, or it is taken away, it can be traumatic” (Blanchard, 1998, p. 14).
The “Maze” represents the place where we spend time looking for our cheese. Our “Maze” can be our place of work, our community, or in our relationships.
The story tells us that the simple and complex parts of us are both involved in our search for “cheese” in somewhat different ways, and the different parts search for different kinds of “cheese”. The mice and little people used a simple trial and error method The little people also used their brains to develop more sophisticated methods in their search.
The story also tells us that our complex parts will sometimes allow our beliefs and emotions to cloud the way we see things and make our search more complicated and challenging.
