Motivating Employees

Is it possible to motivate an employee using intrinsic and extrinsic motivation?
I do believe that it is possible to motivate most employees’ using intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. I also think this will happen more effectively if the manager in willing to put in the time and effort to identify and provide the correct motivators.
Let’s start with motivating an employee using intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation reflects on the desire to do something because it is enjoyable. Some theorist believes there is only one kind of intrinsic motivation. That motivation is one that can be described as engaging in activities that enhance or maintain a person's self-image or concept of themselves. Other theorist define intrinsic motivation in a broader possibly more useful termsuch as intrinsically motivating activities are those in which people like to partake in for no reward other than enjoyment that these certain activities bring them. To motivate an employee using intrinsic motivation the manager should really listen to what their employees like the most about the job, and try giving that employee more task that include the activities they like. For example, I would love to work in a daycare, and so would a friend of mine. We both have different likes and dislikes about the daycare setting. She prefers to work in the kitchen, she enjoys making foods for the children and from time to time she likes to make snakes with the children. I on the other hand prefer to work with the children, and preferably the babies and toddlers. I enjoy working with small children, and I don’t care to work in the kitchen at all. If our manager would watch us or ask us what we liked about our jobs he/she would know to put me in charge of the infant/toddler room and put my friend in charge of making the meals and snacks in the daycare. Our jobs then would be done by using intrinsic motivation because it’s what we enjoy, we do not need any bonus or reward to do our jobs.
