What does Motherhood mean to me? Personally speaking, it means starting all over again, learning how to care for a newborn after nearly ten years.

Motherhood means realizing how wrong you were when you thought caring for this newborn would be just like caring for your first child (Oh God, how wrong I was...) It means changing little baby boy diapers are a lot more difficult than changing little girl diapers (once I was peed on 7 times in 24 hours).

Motherhood means researching terms like jaundice and colic and arguing with doctors over the best methods of treatment. It means having to endure the pain when your baby gets his first set of immunizations. It means trying to keep my temper in check when my (now former) son's doctor questions my decision to not have my boy circumcised. (An epinion on that topic will follow)

Motherhood means very little sleep, a lot of take-out and crock pot meals. It means teaching the husband and ten year old daughter to wash their own laundry and cook their own meals because I'm too damned sleepy to do it for them.

Motherhood is trying to teach your baby that day and night are NOT the same thing; that 11 p.m. is not a suitable bed time and that 4:30 a.m. is not a suitable time to wake up.

Motherhood means watching in awe as your baby smiles for the first time and coos. It means serious wonder as you realize that he has cut his first tooth at seven weeks old and looking for an all night grocery store so you can buy some Baby Orajel.

Motherhood means learning all over again that it IS very possible for a baby to projectile vomit when you don't burp him good enough, that leak guards in diapers don't hold up when your baby is wearing that expensive little Christmas outfit your in-laws bought him.

Motherhood means having a little tiny human being completely dependant on you for his every basic need. It means being scared to death and utterly overjoyed.
