“Motha’s Day for Big Mae”
This is a story about a Big woman that goes by the name of “Big Mae”. She is the common law wife to a man named Old man Berry. He spends his days sitting in the bar owned by a man named Howard. Every morning Smitty and Cuz who were Berry’s buddies, along with Berry stood outside the bar waiting for Howard to arrive. Inside they sit around talking mess and Berry spends all of the money given to him by Mae. One day, Howard decides to give berry a piece of his mind regarding the way he treats Mae. Berry hadn’t had a job in years and Mae was on welfare, but everyday Berry sits in the bar and spends Mae’s welfare money on drinks. Howard advises Berry that it is time to get his self together and do right by Mae. As Howard was talking to Berry he had an epiphany. He finally realized how good of a woman Mae had been to him and he knew that it was time for him to make a change. Berry decided that he would do something nice for Mae, he was getting ready to head home when he was met by her son who had tears in his eyes. He had come to tell Berry that Mae was dead. He was too late. This story is a lesson, it teaches us not to take people or thing for granted because we never know how long we will have them. It also shines truth on the saying “ You don’t miss a good thing until its gone”. Q. What effect do you believe the story was meant to have on the reader?
