The Mood of “The Clask of Amontillado”
by Sabrina Marconi

In “The Clask of Amontillado” Poe uses diction , details , and imagery which ultimately creates a frightening, severe , and intense mood of the overall story. “Unsheathing ,y rapier , I began to grope with it about the recess; but the thought of an instant reassured me.” In this quote you seem to realize how mentally unstable Montresor truly is , we know this because he is reassured by the stonewalls being thick enough to block the sound of Fortunato's merciful pleads . Also Montresor could have been scared that the wall that he had just built had never truly been there and some how Fortunado has escaped …. this shows us that Montresor is not completely heartless for the has one emotion left – Fear! “But now there came from out the niche a low laugh that erected the hairs on my head.” This line from the story is confusing , because as far as we know Montresor has planned everything out and so far everything has gone according to plan , I have to assume that he wasn't expecting Fortunado to laugh , which make the mood even more chilling. Furthermore, Montresor whom was just a moment ago relishing the screams , of the owner of the bone chilling laugh ,is now frightened . “The noise lasted for several minutes , during which , that I might hearken to it with more satisfaction , I ceased my labors and sat down among the bones.” Montresor has just has just chained up Fortunado in a catacomb and listening to Fortunato scream ,
