The last supper depicts the final gathering of Jesus Christ with his disciples, The Passover meal they shared before Jesus was brought to trail and crucified. Leonardo captures a particular moment in the story, as related in the Gospel book of Matthew in the Bible. Jesus, shown at the center of the composition, he just said to his followers: “One of you shall betray me”. The disciples, Matthew tells us, “were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?”…

The last supper was created to show Jesus’s last meal before he was crucified and tortured. It also shows the moment right before his friend was about to betray him. There was tension in the room and it was an action packed scene and Leonardo tried to capture the best part. He tried to make the person looking at the painting to see more just like an author would do to a book.…

This object, being placed in the back of a long central hallway, is found in a room containing large sculptures of men and women. There were also many portraits of only the heads of men and women. This placement hints to the wide belief that this head was originally thought to be prepared as a separate piece for insertion in a stature. There was once a veil covering the top and back of the head, but now it is missing. Marble at the summit and back of the head was left roughly worked, since a veil in either marble or stucco, a fine plaster used for moldings and other architectural decorations, would have hidden it. For the development of the ideal form, this sculpture had to accomplish its purpose having had to restrict itself almost exclusively to form giving the viewer a feeling of tranquility and authority.2 Consequently,…

El Greco's "Feast in the House of Simon" creates a visual story of the last supper. It has similar and completely different attributes of a painting I'm more familiar with, Da Vinci's "Last Supper." The reason for thinking this is because of the what is taking place in the scene and for the story I recall learning as a child. The similarities I notice first is seeing Jesus as an important main focal point being placed in the center. As I look farther into El Greco's painting I notice how different it is.…

Many things can go wrong when a work of art is restored. Many materials used in the previous centuries are not made the same way today. This can make a restored piece of art look completely different than the original. Whoever is restoring the piece of art can also change the way the restored piece looks. According to Vogel, “There was the option, popular in the case of ancient sculptures, of leaving masterworks unrestored if they cracked with age, excavation, or accidents – a process conservators often call ‘the romance of the fragment’” (A1). Despite all that can go wrong when restoring a piece of art, the statue of Adam is now back on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where others can see the restored statue and decide for themselves whether the restoration was a success or a failure. Jack Soultanian concludes, “It’s always been a gem in the collection but now it’s presented according to its status” (qtd. in…

I choose these artworks, because they were both found in catacombs so they represent the need to hide Christianity and eventually the acceptance of Christianity. Jesus Healing the Bleeding Woman is a painting that lacks extreme detail, and indicates being rushed/not having tools (Early Christian Art and Architecture). This painting is significant because it represents how early Christians effectively told the stories of their faith and tells the story of Mark 5:25-34. The sculpture, Jesus the Good Shepherd, originally made in the Roman catacombs, became popular when Christianity was accepted and has been replicated hundreds of times since then and reminds people of Early Christian Art’s origin. This sculpture presents Christ as the good shepherd which is spoken of often in the Bible, and specifically in John 10:11. I chose these two works of art for the Early Christian Art room because I wanted to show the difference in art from when Christians were hiding and…

The Torso of a God is a sculpture located at the Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco. The sculpture is of a pharaoh holding a staff in front of its chest with his left hand. In his right hand he is holding something that could possibly be a bell or a key, by his side. The piece looks as though it never had legs past the knees due to the stability that exists and the fact that it appears to be flat on the area it sits on. The head has broken off so that only the headpiece and beard can be seen and it is broken at an angle that the right shoulder is missing as well. The left arm is also missing except for the hand and shoulder. The back of the piece is flat as though the piece was originally located against a wall. This piece is about three feet tall and about two feet wide. The piece is smooth all over and even though certain areas are carved out, the piece still has a smooth glossy look. The statue is wearing some sort of skirt that covers the area from the hips all the way down to the bottom of the piece. It also looks like the God is wearing a bracelet on his right wrist as well as a necklace underneath the beard and headpiece. The skirt and headpiece are shown by many vertical lines next to one another with a border around them to show where they stop. Other than the left leg that is slightly stepping…

In this essay you will be comparing and contrasting two different types of paintings. The same subject matter but different ideas of the same subject. I will be writing about The Last Supper, which was painted by Giampietrino, after Leonardo da Vinci. He used oil on canvas while painting the piece of art. The year that Giampietrino painted this picture was in 1520. Another work of art that I will be writing about will be The Last supper by Francesco Fontebasso. He painted this picture in 1762 using oil on canvas. As you can see from both types of arts, that they were both painted on oil on canvas and both have the same subject matter which is the last supper that Jesus Christ had. To both of these painting’s in person, you can go to the Royal academy of Arts in London to see the Giampietrino piece and Fontebasso’s piece is found in Museum Fund of the State Hermitage in St Petersburg.…

During his time painting the Virgin of the Rocks Leonardo Da Vinci utilized light and shadow to achieve depth and authenticity in the scenery behind the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus. Also, in the way Leonardo Da Vinci chose to paint the subjects in the Virgin of the Rocks shows an authenticity in the artwork giving the piece a sense of realness, or truthfulness. On the other hand, though, The Last Supper is an exceptional display of detail and expression. The Last Supper was a painting of Jesus Christ and his twelve disciples engaging in the last meal Jesus Christ would partake in before he was offered up as a ransom on the torture stake. This painting is an extremely religious painting that Leonardo Da Vinci was commissioned to paint. The Virgin of the Rocks is also a religious…
