1OVERVIEW (diagram)

Each child carries within himself a unique potential. In here, it is termed as Pre-determined Psychic Patterns (PPP). There are basically 8 natural laws (psychic pattern) at work in children, namely: 2.1Law of work - through work, children will self-construct and become normalized. Child will be happy and satisfied given work. to work and complete a work. 2.2Law of independence – no one can be free unless he is independent. The child will use his independence to follow his own inner guide for actions which will lead him to self-construction. Child is meant to function without the immediate help of others. 2.3Power of attention – child is sensitive to his environment; he will draw attention to particular object in his environment with an intensity and interest not seen before. 2.4Development of will – Development of will comes after when the child is able to prolong attention and concentration through repeated work. With the gain of power over his own movement, the child is ready for self-development and self-discipline. By then, he is able to learn how to obey and hence serve others. 2.5Development of intelligence – development of a child’s intelligence is to help him put the images of the consciousness in order, knowing life itself and put himself in relates to the environment. 2.6Development of imagination and creativity – Imagination is a creative force based on reality and grows out of it with intact to the environment around him. It is the mental ability to create original images and concepts through reality life which will combines those in the past experiences. 2.7Development of emotional and spiritual life – Montessori believed that a child posses the capability to respond to his emotional and spiritual environment and receive stimuli form people around him. With the development of emotional and spiritual life, his needs will be met through social interaction, he will be able to hold responsibilities of his own and others and also develop moral values. 2.8Stage of child’s growth – Montessori believed that growth and development take places in 4 stages. At different stages, we must have specific goal in development, and readily direction to meet the specific sensitivities of a child.

One would no more expect a sunflower seed to produce a rose, than one would expect a child to blossom in a way that is not inherit to his or his own nature. According to Montessori, at a certain stage of a child’s development and the child becomes sensitive to his environment, hence begins to pay attention to particular objects in his environment. Initially, the child is attracted to materials that are appealing to their five senses, and then to the ‘unknown’ due to curiosity and later the ‘known’ attracts him to an activity. At age of 0-3, a child already unconsciously stored up many information, impressions and images of the environment, but then this is not the knowledge. In order for a child to obtain conscious knowledge, a child must adjust to the power of attention. At the age of 3-6, he should learn to turn his attention towards an object and to hold attention on an object.
