Monster
How would you like to be on trial for something you didn’t do? In Monster, by Walter Dean Myers, Steve Harmon is on trial for felony murder. I believe that Steve Harmon is innocent because he didn’t know Bobo Evans, the store wasn’t clear, and there was no signal. The first reason why Steve Harmon is innocent because Steve did not know Bobo Evans. For example, in the novel Monster, by Walter Dean Myers, writes, “Did you talk to Steve Harmon… No… But you had not spoken to Mr. Harmon prior to the stickup… Naw” (195,197). This shows that Steve and Bobo never seen each other. This also shows that Steve and Bobo never heard of each other. Clearly, Steve Harmon did not know Bobo Evans. The second reason why I think Steve Harmon is innocent because the drugstore wasn’t clear. For example, in the novel Monster, by Walter Dean Myers, wrote, “Mrs. Henry said that she was in the drugstore when the robbery happened… if someone was to make sure that the drugstore was clear, they made a bad job of it” (247). This shows that Steve Harmon was not by the drugstore. This also shows that Steve Harmon wasn’t in the drugstore. Clearly, Steve Harmon couldn’t be the look out. The third reason why I think Steve Harmon is innocent because Steve didn’t give a signal. For example, in the novel, Monster, by Walter Dean Myers wrote, “He was suppose to tell us if there was anybody in the drugstore… He didn’t say nothing so we figured it was all right” (182). This demonstrates that Steve Harmon did not make sure it was clear. This also shows that Steve was quiet and didn’t give a signal. Clearly, Steve didn’t give a signal.

Some people, however, would argue that Steve Harmon is guilty because, he was at the drugstore the day of the robbery. For example, in the novel Monster, by Walter Dean Myers wrote, “Anybody can walk into a drugstore and look around… I walked into a drugstore to look for some mints, and then I walked out.”

While on the stand, his lawyer begins to question him: “O’Brien: ‘Mr. Harmon, were you in the drugstore owned by Mr. Nesbitt, the victim, on the 22nd of December of last year?’ Steve: ‘No, I was not’”(223).…

When it comes to Peggy Hettricks case it has been cold for many of decades. This was a mystery case in 1987 and in August 10, 1998 Timothy Masters was charged with Peggy’s death. When reading this case Timothy Masters was released and dismissed of all charges in 2008. When it came to the roles in this case they were very hard to follow in my opinion. The prosecutor had the role to present the State’s case against the defense which he/she had to prove that it was in Mr. Masters knife collection, his drawings, failure to report seeing Peggy’s body, and the time frame of the homicide. Which with that being said that is why he was a suspect of Peggy Hettrick murder. It took the police several years with them trying to build a case and which didn’t come up with too much evidence.…

In writing his novel “Monster”, Walter Dean Myers used his experience to keep the judicial system relevant to his points while still realistic. Steve’s attorney, O’Brien, is honest about her role in the system to Steve, telling him, “My job is to make sure the law works for you as well as against you.” Instead of pretending to be crusading for a not guilty verdict, O’Brien tells the truth that she intends to help hunt down the truth both for and against Steve as an unbiased tool of the court. This means that she will insure that the jury’s predispositions do not change their verdicts, that the prejudice of the court doesn’t change the evidence given in court, and that the evidence against Steve is legitimate and/or nonexistent.…

Cruz also has a “tough guy” reputation and persona, he is clearly an insubordinate, regarding his response to Steve. Which makes it ever more likely that he would lie under oath in order to incriminate Steve, who had challenged his authority. The woman who said that she was in the store shortly before the actual robbery and murder took place, her statement only places James King in the store during that time. By her account she was the only one in the store prior to the arrival of the two perpetrators.(162-164). Steve experiences an internal conflict regarding the way in which he wishes to be acknowledged. In chapter five, within Steve's journal, we see Steve experiencing this desire to be seen as a good person. "...What did I do? Anybody can walk into a drugstore and look around. Is that what I am on trial for? I didn't do nothing!..." (P. 115) Here he proclaims is innocence in his jorunal. In chapter three, Steve has to deal with some strong prejudicial stereotypes that may affect jurors. For example, O' Brien's words to him are "...You're young, you're black, and you're on trial. What else do they need to know?..." (P. 78-9). Here she is saying that the jury is pre-judging him before the case is over and nothing so far is evidence as to him being innocent. Steve's sense of his self-identity is further strained when he realizes that his father is no longer sure of who he is. When Steve asks his father if he believes that Steve did nothing wrong, the father is unable to give him the reassurance he…
