PROBLEM STATEMENT

Social networking negatively impacts on the academic performance of students at Presentation College Chaguanas.

EDUCATIONAL VALUE OF THE RESEARCH

No one would have believed that a networking tool developed solely for military purposes in the US in 1969 would become the social network of so many people worldwide. Due to its popular use, it is important that all involved in the educational development of students at Presentation College Chaguanas be aware of the positive as well as the negative effects of social networking on the academic performance of students. One where policies and guidelines can be adopted to properly manage usage and time spent on popular networking sites.

PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH

Social networking refers to applications which allow users to engage in interactive dialogues such as chat, video chat and instant messaging. It is becoming increasingly popular, especially among the youth today. Critics say that it is a distraction to students and a hindering factor in their attitude towards schoolwork. On the other hand however, social media is a new asset to promote studying, where it allows students to communicate freely with each other. At Presentation College Chaguanas, students have been found to spend excessive amounts of time behind social networks. This takes away from study time as well as family time. This study looks at the various reasons for the use of social networks and seeks to lend advice on how students can improve their academic performances by less frequent use and better time management practices pertaining to the use of social networks. As with the rise in any new technology or trend, social networking had attracted and captured the attention of both young and old. While some research met avid user, hence putting forward a myriad of reasons supporting its benefits and use, there are those who are rightly concerned of its adverse effects on the academic performance of student-users. Their study will seek to show that social networking can be both beneficial as well as harmful depending on its usage. It will also present guidelines on the proper use of special networks so as to avoid or minimize its negative effects on students’ academic performances. RESEARCH QUESTIONS
