Chapter I
THE PROBLEM This chapter contains subtopics that talks about the problem in this research such as background of the study, conceptual framework, statement of the problem, null hypothesis, significance of the study, scope and delimitations of the study and definition of terms.

Background of the Study Nowadays, the demands for every man’s needs are drastically increasing. Consumption of our basic needs is at its peak because of our increasing population. There are many industries now that require twice the effort of labor than before, and one of which is in the agricultural industry. We cannot deny the fact that agricultural exports and imports all over the world are essential to maintain natural equilibrium and satisfy the needs of society which is why one of the main sources of livelihood in Philippines is farming. Many Filipino farmers rely on the sales that the industry offers them and the presence of such pests like rats, slugs or snails affects their crops/vegetation greatly thus, it is important to implement efficient and economical measures in protecting crops continuously. The golden apple snails (Pomacea canaliculata) are presently considered as a rice pest of national importance. The illegal introduction of the golden apple snails (Pomacea canaliculata) took place in the 1980s through the aquarium trade. It was initially introduced by the private sector as an aquaculture species, particularly as a cheap source of protein. Later, it found its way to waterways and rice fields. In 1995, the reported damage of golden apple snails (Pomacea canaliculata) in rice farming was estimated in more than 800,000 hectares all over the country. Estimated rice yield loss from golden apple snail infestation from 1985 to 1991 in the Philippines increased along with expanding infestation. Instead of becoming a boom to food production it became a bane in rice farming. Since then, researches on varied subjects, particularly on its control in rice farming,

Mud crabs belonging to the Genus Scylla are large portunids with high commercial value. Its culture in the Philippines is a significant source of income for farmers. However, a major constraint to grow-out culture activities is insufficient supply of crablets gathered from the natural habitat. To answer this problem, research on larval rearing of mud crab has been intensified. One of the problems that causes low survival in the larval rearing of mud crab is the occurrence of bacterial and fungal infection. Treflan, a fungicide, has been used to prevent the occurrence of fungal infection in some crustaceans. However, the effect of Treflan on the growth and survival of each larval stage of mud crab has not been investigated.…

Black rice bug or mostly known as ‘’ itim na atangya ‘’ appears commonly during rainy seasons yet they are also seen during summer and when irrigation starts. An adult female bug lays their eggs in clusters, each containing 29-34 eggs, egg incubation of RBB is 3 to 7 days. It lives from 3 to 7 months. The female lays about 200 eggs during her lifetime. Large populations of this pests are more common on lowland rice, rain fed fields and continuously irrigated ones, because the eggs only survives when near the water source. During dry conditions, the female bug deposits its eggs on the leaves and stem. Eggs are also laid in cracks on the soil and on roots. These bugs belong to the Pentatomidae and under in the Hemiptera order which tells that these bugs are truly pests to our crops and plants. According to the International Rice Research Institute and the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology, there are three or four overlapping generations of these pests in a year. The first generation and part of the second generation occur on the first crop; the remainder of the second, the third, and part of the fourth generation occurs on the second crop. There are two overlapping generations in aestivation at each period between crops. At aestivation sites, fourth and fifth in star nymphs and adults are most commonly found.…

Approximately 52% of the global production of rice is lost annually owing to the damage caused by biotic stress factors, of which 21% is attributed to the attack of insect pests (Yarasi et al., 2008). Rice is infested by more than 100 species of insects and mites and about 20 of them are considered to be major economic significance. Among the serious insect pests, rice leaf folder (RLF), Cnaphalocrosis medinalis (Guenee) and yellow stem borer (YSB), Scirpophaga incertulas (Walker) are considered to be major lepidopteran pests causing significant yield loss. Rice leaf folder, earlier considered to be minor pests have gained the status of major pests with the wide spread cultivation of high yielding varieties and the accompanying changes in cultural practices. Leaf folder larva fastens the edges of the leaves, folded them longitudinally and feed on green matter. A damaged leaf produce white streaks, become membranous and ultimately reduces the photosynthetic activity of the plant. The extent of loss may extend up to 63 to 80 percent depending on agro-ecological situations (Rajendran et al., 1986). Yellow stem borer larvae after emerging from the egg mass enters in to the tiller and feed inside it and damages the central whorl, resulting into dead heart during vegetative stage and white ears at…

A laboratory study on bio efficacy of organic pesticides, indigenous plant extracts, bio pesticides and commercial neem oil were evaluated against third instar larvae of tobacco caterpillar to know the antifeedant properties of organics at Main Agricultural Research Station, Raichur during 2010-11. On 24 hours after treatment imposition no leaf feeding by S.litura was observed in commercial neem treatment and indicated its statistical superiority over rest of the treatments and was followed by NSKE 5 per cent where in 21.12 per cent leaf area wasfed, which also proved its statistical superiority over rest of the biorationals in having antifeedant property..The…
