The novel ‘The Story of Tom Brennan’ by J.C Burke explores the ways how individuals grow when they are taken out of their comfort and venture into new experiences.
The novel ‘The Story of Tom Brennan’ by J.C Burke follows the lives of the Brennan family, namely the title character Tom Brennan. After the events of a fatal car accident the novel depicts the chaos that tragedy can bring down upon a family and how it thrusts individuals into a new world. The novel follows the response of Tom Brennan in relation to the accident and his journey to overcome his past and learn to adapt to his new world. Tom’s way of looking at life is altered through the use of first person narrative and visual imagery as Tom states.

Tom an innocent victim tries to alter his feelings of guilt and grief due to the recklessness of his brother Daniel. The Brennans decision to move to another town suggests the impact that Daniel has caused to the society. The stigma brought upon the Brennans is made significant as to which a once loyal, small tight knit community has turned their backs upon the Brennans who was once held at high esteem due to their involvement in football. The move to Coghill implies a change in community dynamics through the use of colloquial language.
