Moccasin game- analysis

The Heirs of Columbus tells of the nine tribal descendants of Christopher Columbus. For the heirs, tribal identity rests in tribal stories, and they are consummate storytellers. Vizenor is a mixeblood Chippewa who writes fiction in the trickster mode of Native American tradition, using humour to challenge received ideas. The important role in The Heirs of Columbus plays the finally part of the story ‘Moccasin game’. Stone enters a contest with the evil gambler, a windigoo trickster, setting the stage for Anishinaabe mythodology and the fight of good and evil forces (who returns to Point Assinika to resume the moccasin game that he was about to win many years ago). The goal of the gambler is to win the moccasin game and beat the good forces, extinguishing all life on earth. Stone places the war herb under the last moccasin, the one worn by Felipa Flowers, with the marked coin. Stone, with the use of his powerful war herb, is able to identify the proper moccasin and warns wiindigoo that only robots will survive, who would mock him forever, but the wiindigoo wishes to finish the game. Browne creates laser figures- Jesus Christ, Christopher Columbus, Filipa Flower, and Pocahontas who walk to the moccasin game near the Trickster of Liberty. It is the climax of the moccasin game and this kind of scene contest that the moccasin game become. The children wounds were healed.

The colour which appears in the story is blue, for instance, the blue statue- the Trickster of Libery. There is also many other blue things; during the reburial ceremonies for Filipa Flowers and Pocahontas the heirs and the children wear blue moccasins, Miigis dances in a blue robe, Binn Columbus hears the stories of the Pocahondas death in the blue moccasins, and so on. The colour of blue is held in high religious regard by many Native American cultures. Stone Columbus is the ‘crosssblood trickster healer’ in the story. The trickster is associated with creative...
