Mobile Phone
Smartphones affects our lives. Nowadays, people are too dependent to smartphones. The proliferation of the smartphone has plunged our world into a new era of technology dependence. Today, perhaps you would have been laughed by someone if you don’t own a smartphone. As a communication tool and an entertainment device, smartphones play an important role in our life. For some of us, we can’t even go a day without our smartphones. We created technology to serve us, yet so many of us – me included – have fallen enslaved to our phones. Ever lose your phone for one moment and felt your heart jump out of your chest? This is what I am talking about. Most of us are addicted to our smartphones. If you want to know whether you are addicted to your smartphone, ask yourself these questions: Do you check your smartphone within an hour of waking up this morning? Do you check your smartphone at times without any reasons? Or do you check your smartphone the moment you receive a text message or email? Come on, don’t let your smartphone master your life. We should use our smartphones wisely. What is a smartphone? What makes you call it a smartphone instead of cell phone? Smartphone is cell phone which is available for the internet access and computer functions. The smartphone has a lot of functions like GPS, Wi-Fi, camera, recorder, timer and calculator. And of course we can access to social networking websites like Facebook and Tweeter through our smartphones. Now, this is the problem. We always see people who bury themselves in their smartphones during social gatherings, whether we’re out to dinner, discussing a group project, or even playing a round of board games. This is rude and it kills the momentum and social flows of conversation. Here is a solution to prevent people to bury themselves in their smartphones during a social gathering: play the Phone Stacking Game. Everyone stacks their phones faced down on the table and the first person to reach for their phones is punished. The punishment can be whatever you decide. If you are out to dinner, the person has to pick up the whole bill. Another example, during lessons, your phone rings or vibrates, you will check your phone at the moment because you know you have received a message. This may distracts you from the lesson and causing you hard to concentrate at school. Next, people take out their smartphones and swipe on it for no reason whenever they are bored. But at the time, they are missing out on all the scenery, people and opportunities around them. Don’t get me wrong, smartphones are a great tool when used properly. It can truly enhance one’s life. However when abused, when people place too much important in their phones, there can be real and serious consequences.

The impact of our smartphone obsession is making us lonely and alienating us from friends, family, and partners. In the beginning of the video “I Forgot My Phone”, there is a couple in bed “while [the man] pays no mind and checks his smartphone.” At the end of the video, as the couple gets back in bed, the man is still browsing the web on his phone. The woman, who is being ignored, inspires our pity, but the man is pathetic because he is “talking” to a lifeless device rather than having a conversation with the real person lying right beside him. If the man keeps doing this, the woman will not only leave “he and his phone” alone, but will also break up with the man since the more time you spends on your phone, the “easier” you will become alienated from others. Serena, one of my friends, had a similar experience of being isolated. She had more than a thousand friends and a hundred thousand followers on her Facebook, and needed to spend six hours a day on her phone to response to the comments on Facebook. Serena was using her phone during work, on the subway, and even in bed until she fell asleep since this was the only way to maintain the relationships with her Facebook friends and followers on the Internet. In the virtual world, she was a celebrity of sorts; however, no one would invite her to any activity because they thought she either already had too…

Smartphone users are so used to communicating over the phone or through text messages that they rarely understand the etiquettes of face to face communication. With little experience preforming the act, many are unaware of how to conduct themselves properly. According to Bian and Leung, “Some users even put the mobile phone on the table for all to see, implying that if the interaction is not interesting enough, and they have alternatives. Furthermore, some users appear invasive, impolite and disruptive” (62). Checking their phones and not maintaining eye contact while holding a conversation, is one of the many mistakes that smartphone users unintentionally make. Yet not only is the etiquette of direct communication affected but also the conversation. Body language speaks volumes over what a person is actually saying. People who are unaccustomed to this form of interactions will be unaware of these subtle cues. According Thornton, smartphones have been proven unfavorable to conversations held face to face in the present. A persons mind begins to wonder to the interaction opportunities within the broad range of their mobile devises and their actions soon reflect these thoughts (480). The mere presence of smartphones has an effect on the way we communicate effectively. Russel made the claim…
