The issue of slavery dominated the 19th century. As a result the United States was forced to create compromises between the North and the South. Two the compromises which the U.S was forced to make was the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850. In 1820, a sectional crisis erupted as to what state would be free and what state would be a slave state. Congress was faced with the request from Maine to be entered into the union. The Missouri compromise was an agreement passed in 1820 between pro-slavery and anti-slavery congress men. The compromise admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. The law prohibited slavery in the Louisiana Territory north of 36’ 30’ with the exception of Missouri. The compromise was created from the efforts of Henry Clay. Another movement the United States made to deal with the issue of slavery was the Compromise of 1850. The compromise of 1850 consisted of five laws that dealt with the issues of slavery. The five laws were: 1. California would be admitted as a free state. 2. Remainder of lands procured from Mexico would be self-determine. 3. Texas and Mexico boundary dispute would be resolved. 4. U.S would pay Mexico $10 million. 5. Slave trade would be abolished in Washington D.C. Congress debated the compromise for six months, but in the end it failed. The benefit to this although was new voices were heard and the voices were much more extreme. I feel like these compromises were very effective, even the Compromise of 1850 which didn’t end up getting passed. I feel like the Missouri Compromise was a very good decision made my congress to be passed. It was able to satisfy both those wanting slaves and those who were anti-slavery. Although new compromises would be made in the future abolishing slavery everywhere in the United States the Missouri Compromise was able to hold people over for a little bit of time.
