Miss Caroline Fisher of Killing a Mockingbird
Miss Caroline Fisher Miss Caroline Fisher is one of the characters of the book “Killing a Mockingbird”. At first she appears in the second chapter. She was a teacher for first grade students, her age was nearly twenty-one. Miss Caroline was from North Alabama, from Winston Country. She was a bit conservative young woman and wanted to control and teach students in her own way, that’s why she told Scout not to read with her father because it would bring damage to further studying. She was trying to teach students according to the new educational system called Dewey Decimal System. Miss Caroline didn’t understand that Maycomb is its own little world and differs a lot from other places. I think Miss Caroline was little unprepared for the group of her students, she wasn’t aware of the folk that lived in Maycomb that’s why she didn’t know about social status of her students. When she suggested to Walter Cunningham to take him a quarter and go buy something to eat but boy refused because if she noticed earlier Walter didn’t have shoes on so how he could possibly afford himself take a quarter if he wouldn’t be able to repay it. There was another incident with student, it concerns Little Chuck. She was afraid of a cootie that was in his hair and she told him to get rid of it. In the end boy said that she wouldn’t return to school. It made Miss Caroline upset and she started to cry but students managed to calm down her. Miss Caroline lacked a bit of understanding.

As people grow in life, they mature and change in many different ways. Harper Lee is the author of To Kill a Mocking Bird. This book is about Scout Finch and her life in the 1930’s in Maycomb County, Alabama. Harpe, shows how Scout matures and progresses in this book along with many other things. For example Scout, the main character, realizes her town is racist after the Tom Robinson trial. Harper also informs the reader about things Scout does not understand throughout the book. One of the things she demonstrates is the reason why Jem, Scout’s brother, is acting different. She does not know what people act like at that age because she is a lot younger, so all of his behavior is new to her. One of the other examples Harper shows is the very unique relationship between Miss Caroline, Scout’s teacher, and Scout. They would like each other, but Miss Caroline’s teaching strategy is bad for Scout because she is able read.…

When Ms. Caroline’s failures as a teacher start to discourage Scout, Atticus persuades her to continue going to school with a bargain. He suggests that if she’ll continue going to school, then “[they’ll] go on reading every night, just as [they] always have” (41). He makes reading seem like a privilege—a reward for going to school—and convinces her to continue her education. Also, his use of the phrase “every night” suggests that it will be a long-term commitment. Furthermore, Atticus makes it clear to Scout that school is not optional. When Scout proclaims that she will not be going to school anymore because she doesn’t feel well, Atticus responds with a “dose of magnesia for you tonight and school tomorrow” (39). Atticus shows that he can see through her act, he is also making a point; school is not something Scout escape easily. Whereas “not feeling well” may persuade Atticus to allow Scout stay home from family gatherings and other casual occasions, school is essential to Scout’s education. Lastly, Atticus uses the Ewells as an example for why Scout must go to school if she wants to learn. The Ewells never show “the faintest sign of wanting an education,” which is why they don’t go to school and are content to “live like animals” and be the “disgrace of Maycomb county” (40). The Ewells don’t go to school simply because they don’t want to, but Scout asks…

In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, the characters in Maycomb, Alabama, illustrate how it takes more than just a father and a brother, but a town, for one child to grow up. Scout is six years old, at the beginning of the book. She is whiney, and fidgety, and can hold a grudge for as long as she can hold her temper. By the end of the novel, Scout is about eight years old, and has moved on from her ways of childhood behavior, into a more adult-like attitude. The plot of To Kill a Mockingbird, really maps out Scout’s changing from a young child to a more structured young lady. It shows the theme of how Scout is taught to move from innocence to adulthood. This theme is shown greatly through the relationship of Atticus and his children, and how he devotes himself to building up a civil mind and attitude in Scout and Jem. The times when the children are at school display Atticus’s effective teaching to his children. For example, in school, Scout is constantly confronted for knowing too much, by the teachers, whose cool attitudes towards the children are dark, and overly judgmental. In chapter two, of To Kill a Mockingbird, Miss Caroline scolds Scout for being able to read when she says, “Now you tell your father not to…

sense Mayella is a “rebel”, but she is also a outcast. Mayella is a victim of abuse, and Harper Lee uses this character as a comparison to Scout. He compares a stubborn girl who is not afraid to fight with a young woman who tries to save herself during the Tom Robinson trial. Mayella Ewell can be chracterized as a “sexual predator” when she sends the children out for ice cream, and grabs Tom Robinson by the legs in attempt to kiss him. Lee doesn’t think that Mayella is a predator, but merely just a young, weak woman. Mayella is feeble enough to allow her father, who already has a abusive hold over her, to get away with the truth, and uphold his “reputation”.…

At the beginning of the book, when Scout goes to first grade on the first day of school she already knows how to read and Mrs. Caroline gets mad and yells at her for it. “Teach me? He hasn’t taught me anything, Mrs. Caroline” (Lee 22). This quotation shows that Scout is confused because her teacher gets mad at her from reading before being taught. Mrs. Caroline thinks she was taught wrong way and Scout is confused why she’s mad. Scout believes that just because you know how to read doesn’t mean you should be penalized for being advanced.…

Many conflicts take place on the first day of school which lead to her understanding of race, skin and wealth are all equal. Everybody has had enough of her attitude including her teacher, Mrs. Caroline, who said "Jean Louise, I've had about enough of you this morning." (Lee21) On the first day of school, Jean goes through many struggles with the characters including with one of the Cunningham's, Walter. Walter comes from a poor family, as most of the people in Maycomb, and he does not have enough money for lunch one day. Being the blabber mouth Jean is, Jean tells her teacher Mrs. Caroline that Walter is just one of the Cunningham's. Being a new teacher at the school Mrs. Caroline hardly understands what she is talking about. After elaborating on Jean's behalf to Mrs. Caroline, it results to half a dozen smacks on Jean's hand. After beating up Walter, Jem, Scouts brother invites Walter to dinner with the Finches. When Walter pours syrup on everything they are eating, Scout lashes out on him and learns a very significant lesson from Calpurnia. "Don't matter who they are, anybody sets foot in this house's yo' comp'ny, and don't you let me catch you remarkin' on their ways like you was so high and mighty! Secondly, we should see things from others’ perspective. As Atticus says “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view.” (Lee, 30). Miss Caroline cannot accept that Scout already knows how to read and write, because it confuses the teaching formula. Instead of learning from her experiences in the classroom and adapting her teaching accordingly, she sticks to a method that she learned from adults. To Scout, this method is dull. Just as Atticus encourages Scout to place herself in another person’s position before she judges that person, Miss Caroline would do a better job like try to think about her students and respond to their needs rather than simply trying to harsh on their education.…

Scout learns not to judge people in a wrong way before knowing them. Scout judged Boo Radley and Miss Caroline before getting to know them better. It was after the attack by Bob Ewell happened and Scout walked Boo Radley to his house. After meeting Boo Radley she realizes that what she was doing with Dill and Jem like constantly harassing him to come outside was like killing a mockingbird. “Neighbors bring food with death and flowers with sickness and little things in between. Boo was our neighbor. He gave us two soap dolls, a broken watch and a chain, a pair of good luck pennies, and our lives. But neighbors give in return. We never put back into the tree what we took out of it: we have given him nothing, and it made me sad” said Scout (Lee 278). Scout realizes that she should not be afraid of someone before you get to know them; she stepped on Boo Radley’s porch and realized all the stuff he had to go through. Boo did something in return by saving Scout and Jem’s lives .Another lesson was when Scout thought her teacher Miss Caroline Fisher treated her students poorly. Scout thought that Miss Caroline was a mean teacher who had no respect for her students. When Scout went home she told Atticus that she never wanted to go back to school because of Miss Caroline, but Atticus told her “You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view” (Lee 30). Scout then learns her point of view; Miss Caroline isn’t…
