1.1/1.2. This is also included when we assist the teacher in planning lessons which is also in job description. By giving input about children we have noticed can and cannot do tasks and those that will need extra support/guidance by doing this we are helping learning and achievement. This is also in the job description of my role, which states "we are required to assist teacher in helping to plan lessons, when and where needed”. As I am in a reception class, we will sometimes need to attend to children’s pastoral needs when necessary. Within our job description it is required for us to work as part of the team to ensure children’s safety and wellbeing, knowing who and when to report incidents to. This is keeping in line with the every child matters agenda. Supporting teacher with the behavioural management of the class i.e. asking children to listen during carpet time, enforcing rules and encouraging positive behaviour, National Occupational Standards for Supporting Children and Learning states "All staff in schools should be equipped with the skills necessary to understand and manage pupil’s behaviour".www.education.gov.uk (2.1.2014). Setting out and tidying away activities, preparing resources for next/future activities. Taking focus groups, guided reading, are all part of the job description. By doing this we are working alongside the childcare act by ensuring all children are included regardless of abilities or disabilities. To support children’s health and safety during onsite and offsite activities. Safeguarding the welfare, recording, the reporting of incidents/accusations or risks to the appropriate people. To uphold the confidentiality of the setting. In my role I am asked to supervise the children in outdoor areas, helping them to asses and manage their own safety. Recording information of tasks set by teacher is very important in my role as this gives the teacher a guideline to work from, when planning future activities. Assisting with playground and…

HLTA’s are professionals that have the relevant training knowledge, skills and experience relevant to, and related to HLTA standards. These standards are designed to provide assurance to teachers and parents about the quality of contribution to pupils learning that HLTA's can be expected to make. Additional, legislation and regulations requires that HLTA’s do not act or take the place of teachers, and that head teachers have influence on selecting staff. While standards are generic across all key stages, training provides opportunity to build on and develop their prior specialist knowledge and experience. Although training will be varied, all HLTA’s will go through the same preparation and assessment process.…

All staff are required to follow policies and procedures to make sure we comply with the various standards which help us provide the right care for the children. In our nursery we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). We use this to help when recording children observations in their own personal folders, we also use this to monitor how the child’s development is progressing and whether they are on target for their age group or if they may need support in certain areas, we also use the EYFS to help when doing midterm plans and weekly plans. All childcare providers caring for children from birth to 5 must register with Ofsted on the Early Years Register (EYR). All providers on this register must deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which sets the standards for early learning, development and care. We are also expected to support…

It is important for practitioners to identify children’s care and learning needs in a setting, there are many reasons for this. Firstly, is to promote development. Some children develop and learn faster than others and it is partly our responsibility to ensure all children’s needs are cared for no matter what stage of development they are at. We can do this by carrying out observations; these help us to identify the exact learning needs of children. They can show us clearly what stage of development each individual child is at, we would compare each child against milestones for that age and stage of development and then we can begin to plan to meet the learning needs of certain children who are not meeting milestones and also plan to accommodate for those children who are over excelling the milestones. Children will develop better if there are adequate numbers of staff/adults present, taking into account the correct staff ratios for each particular age of children. With more hands on around the setting children will benefit greatly so it is important to plan how many adults/staff should be present for a particular day/activity, by doing so there is a higher chance of meeting all of the children’s needs. For example, in my placement I am in a Primary 1 class where there is a teacher and a classroom assistant. For this age range of children the extra support is extremely important as the children’s care and learning needs are higher than that of a Primary 7 child i.e. toileting, a Primary 1 child would need more assistance than that of a Primary 7 child. So if a teacher is caring for the needs of a child who has had a toileting accident it is important to have a classroom assistant so that the other children are supervised and their needs also met.…

To be a key person I am responsible for a small group of around 6-8 children, observing and recording their learning and development. This involves taking pictures for their learning journals and commenting on their day to day activities. We also observe their current development to ensure they are at the right stage for their age in terms of speech & language. It also involves building a positive and supportive partnership with their parents/carers and families, respecting and valuing their cultures and beliefs. We aim to involve parents with all aspects of their child’s journey at Nursery including updating their individual learning plans termly. As a key worker I am heavily involved in this process, encouraging children to achieve their learning goals and to ensure I am up to date with all policies and procedures such as safeguarding, health and safety, the welfare requirements, manual handling, etc.…
