Ministers Black Veil and Huckleberry Finn

In the short story “ The Minister’s Black Veil”, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and the novel Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, assert their themes of the true meaning of life with irony. Irony is expecting something something at first and then getting something else.Their understanding of the meaning of life are mostly the same. They both think that people are act rash for no reason. The feud between the families in the novel was pointless and they forgot why the feud started. In the short story “The Minister’s Black Veil”the community had no reason to ridicule the minister for the veil. Although they are different authors they reflect the same ideas with irony that shows that the true meaning of happiness is having to understand all that are around you . Many times we find ourselves in a never ending grudge, then we one day forget how it started. In the novel these two families are it a never ending rival and they don't even know why. As the families battle it out in the end Huck says, “I aint agoing to tell all that happened”. Here one of the family members die; ironically the young daughter has a happy life running away with the boy she loves. Here twain is trying to point out the devastation that holding grudges can do you your life. Even if you hate someone it is better to let go and forgive. The irony in this is forgiving the ones you hate, how can you forgive someone that has hurt you so much. On sunday everyone went to church. Both the Shepherdsons and the Grangerfords went to church and they had a good sermon, “It was ornery preaching- all about brotherly love, and such like tiresomeness.” Here Twain is uses irony to point out how the families come to church together and yet they still hate each other. Church is a holy place where violence is a sin; it is ironic that the families would come there together. With this Twain is trying to show that violence is pointless and there is no need for it. The feud that they have has no meaning and they should live on...
