Leadership is influencing and guiding people to achieve a common goal. A leader is that person who has the ability to provide that influence and guidance to others. A leader must also conduct some passive measures such as listening to subordinates, and thinking about issues. Leadership requires more than just vision and understanding, a leader must balance actions such as demonstrating or leading by example with empowering subordinates to act on their own within the provided framework. At the higher levels of leadership that person knows his/her strengths and weaknesses and leverages the abilities of his/her subordinates to balance out those traits. Leadership must foster an environment that is open to input, advice, and subordinate points of view, an environment that fosters buy-in from those who are lead and those who are impacted.
A leader must not just demonstrate but truly possess certain characteristics to be successful. They must be professional. They must take the time to get to know the members of the unit, the mission set, and most importantly, himself/herself. He/she must be willing to lead from the front. A leader cannot worry about making mistakes in front of subordinates. He must be willing to do what he/she asks of others. In other words, he/she must be willing to lead by example. A leader must also be physically, mentally, and emotionally tough. We are in the profession of arms. You must demonstrate to your subordinates that you are willing to do what it takes to put them in the best possible circumstances to foster success. A leader is accountable for his/her actions. You must understand the difference between being willing to stand up and take responsibility and being willing to stand up and take responsibility only when it brings you glory, reward, or fame. A leader's integrity must be preserved at all times it is the main trait that allows an individual the freedom to continue operating freely. This mixture of characteristics...
