MILEAGE INDICATOR ON TWO WHEELERS
(A PROJECT DONE ON BAJAJ BOXER) ABSTRACT

Most of the vehicle drivers seek for economical fuel consumption. Moreover fuel saving is also an important factor in today’s world. In this scenario we thought it would give fruitful results if we can show mileage on display as the vehicle runs. Presently there is mileage recorder available in some vehicles (like Bajaj pulsar). But it can give only the mileage that is obtained between two successive refueling. Moreover it will give only the distance traveled in terms of kilometers. It’s nothing but another kilometer indicator with a reset button, from which mileage will be calculated manually. Our electronic mileage indicator will show the mileage [in Km/lit] on a display that will be obtained if the vehicle travels at a particular load and speed. In other terms suppose if the driver is driving the vehicle with a load say 120 kg at a certain speed on a tar road, our mileage indicator will give how much km the vehicle will travel per liter of fuel. Thus the driver can know the optimized driving condition thereby saving fuel.

INTRODUCTION This Mileage indicator is a mini project done by us during March 2008. This mileage indicator can be fitted on any vehicle and also on stationary chemical plants where flow becomes a criterion. This paper is based on our mileage indicator fitted and tested to “BAJAJ BOXER AT”. DESIGN OF MILLAGE INDICATOR: It consists of a proximity sensor, a flow measuring setup, an IC chip (we used a micro processor kit since we had to change the program for more accuracy) and digital display. DESCRIPTION: A petrol engine has a carburetor, from that the air-fuel mixture enters the engine. Our mileage indicator unit is set between the carburetor and fuel tank and hence only the petrol flow determines the mileage. Depending on the number of rotations of the rotor number of pulse will be generated. The number of rotation depends on flow of fuel and this flow is determined by load and driving conditions. The pulse obtained for a constant time is fed to the microprocessor kit and mileage display is made in the digital readout.

WORKING
Principle As the load increases the fuel consumption increases. This is the principal involved. When the fuel flows over the wheel made of very light material (aluminum), it rotates due to the suction created by the engine and also due to fuel impulse. There is a proximity sensor at the top of the setup with a distance of separation of 2mm from the detecting surface. When the wheel rotates, sensor produces pulses.
