1. What are the different forms of social media that exist today? Provide examples of different social media and their primary purposes.


  There are many forms of social media that exist today. The most common form that most people think of right off hand, are social networks such as Facebook and MySpace, which people around the globe can use to interact with each other. They can share photos and videos. Social networks vary greatly in how difficult they are to join as well as how specific their area of interest is. Publishing media websites are another form of social media. They allow for the easy publishing of articles and information. Blogs and wikis are good examples of publishing media. Blogger and Wikipedia are two commonly known publishing media sites. Content sharing sites such as YouTube and Flickr allow you to share content from your social network such as movies, music, photos, and links you found online. Discussion sites are another commonly used type of social media sites. These are sites that have been developed for quick communication through chatting or video conferencing. Yahoo Messenger and Skype are two examples of discussion sites. There are several other types of social media sites including microblogging sites such as Twitter, livestreaming sites such as Friendfeed, livecasting sites such as Justin.tv, virtual worlds such as IMVU, social games such as Farmville, MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online) games, and location sites such as Yelp! There are social media sites of every kind to fit everyone’s lifestyle and interest.
