Assignment task: Technology Management Microsoft & the Internet Case study
Four stages can characterize the Microsoft history: the startup, the MS-DOS, the Windows and the Internet era. If we look to the company performance over the 2 last decades the principal reason for their success is the choice of appropriate business models to bring technologies and products to market. Microsoft had a reputation as imitator.

When & how did Microsoft become aware of the importance of the Internet?
Microsoft had a dominant design of Operating system in the 1980 to 1990 (figure1) decade with very high bargaining power, they were mainly targeting the PC users and less the network business that. So the growth of the internet remained outside of the scope of their core competency. One can say that the really first indicator of a move towards the internet was in 1991 when Mr. Allard implemented the first TCP/IP protocol The Webizing of Microsoft begins in February 1994, when Gate’s technical assistant Steven Sinofsky came back from a university recruiting trip in Cornell University. The internet at that time had spread like a wildfire, not anymore as when Sinofsky was at Cornell University 7 years before. Student where using it as a tool in university to communicate around the world. So a process of change driven by middle managers and external environment made the senior executive aware of the importance of the internet. On the 16 of April 1996, Gates wrote a Memo about Internet Strategy and Technical Goals; this was the first sign of a growing corporate commitment Microsoft's public reaction to the Web remained muted until fall, 1996 when the Web's momentum was too great to ignore as was the threat to Microsoft. Some 20 million people were surfing the Net without using Microsoft software. 2. How did Microsoft strategy-making process work with respect to dealing with the Internet?
