I. Introduction
Magic Johnson once said, "There's Michael Jordan and then there is the rest of us." Since the day he was born, Michael Jordan never settled for less. In everything he did in life he did it to the best of his capabilities. He persevered through adversity, pain and fear to accomplish all of his goals. From his days playing basketball at his local park to playing in front of millions in the NBA finals he always aspired to being the best. His skills, but more importantly his mental strength and personality made him the greatest athlete of all time. II. Background

A. Early Life
Michael Jeffrey Jordan, was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 17, 1963. He was raised in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he attended Trast Middle School. From and early age sports played a crucial role in Michaels life Sports as one might expect played a huge role in Michaels life. According to Sarah Houghton, " Michael loved sports, just like his dad did. His favorite sports was baseball"(Houghton 6). He excelled as an athlete in several sports including baseball, football, and of coarse basketball. To go along with is athletic talents, Michael Jordan also worked to achieve excellent grades all through his middle, high school and college years.

B. High School Sports
As a sophomore Jordan tried out for the varsity basketball team at Emsley A. Laney High School. However at five foot nine inches tall Jordan didn't make the cut, mainly because of his height. Matt Christopher wrote, " Michael thought about quitting the game of basketball altogether. But he didn't. Instead, Michael was determined to become the best player on the Junior Varsity team"(Christopher 8) Jordan couldn't stand being told he wasn't good enough or that he was incapable of doing something he desired. Jordan immediately used the disappointment as motivation and excelled as a person and player playing on the Laney High School junior varsity team. The next season Jordan made his mark in the league on the varsity team and eventually played in the McDonalds All- Americans game, where he became the MVP and broke the scoring record which still stands today. In addition he lead his team to the State Championship, while averaging a triple- double. As a player on the Laney High School baseball team, he became a baseball star and pitched 45 consecutive scoreless innings. After four years of spectacular achievements at Emsley A. Laney High School, Michael graduated and left the school as one best high school athletes in country.

C. NCAA
After graduating high school Michael was recruited by North Carolina Basketball coach Dean Smith, to play for the North Carolina Tar Heels. However, Jordan never actually wanted to play of UNC. Porter writes, " Friends predicted that Jordan would not succeed in basketball there and urged him to attend UNCW"(Porter 9). Jordan ignored what his heart told him and decided to play for UNC anyway, understanding that being part of the Tar Heels meant being part of a historic team that spurred careers of many NBA hall of famers. In fact during Jordan's first year attending the university, he played alongside future NBA superstars James Worthy and Sam Perkins. Although he played on a team with such great talent, he never allowed anyone to overshadow him. He became a started as a freshmen and became a crucial component to the national champion Tar Heels. Any time Jordan finally was presented the opportunity to be the hero by making an important shot, he didn't hesitate. Jordan took over when he was called upon. He ended up making history his first year in the NCAA by sinking the game-winning basket in the National Championship game against the Georgetown Hoyas. Tom Owens wrote in his book, " People wondered how any nineteen-year-old newcomer could be so good"(Owens 6).This painted the road to being the star of the Tar Heels.
