Michael Joseph Jackson was a man who went under the name "King of Pop" he was an American musician, and one of the most successful entertainers. His unique contributions to music, dance and his personal life, made him a prominent figure in popular culture for four decades.
Aug. 29, 1958: Born at 12:13 AM as Michael Joseph Jackson in Gary, Indiana, to Katherine Esther Scruse and Joseph Walter Jackson. 1962/1963: Michael becomes a member of the Jackson 5 along with his brothers Tito, Jackie, Jermaine, and Marlon. He becomes the lead singer. Their father, Joe, was their manager. Their first played gig ever was at a place called Mr. Lucky's. May 16, 1966: Sister Janet Damita Jo is born.
1967: Around this time Jackson began hiding spiders in his older sister LaToya's bed. 1968: The Jackson 5 signs a contract with Motown records.
1969: His band, The Jackson 5, has their first hit single "Want You Back." The debut single sells over two million copies. Aug. 4, 1972: Michael Jackson releases his second album ben. Apr. 13, 1973: Michael Jackson releases his third album Music & Me. Jan. 16, 1975: Michael Jackson releases his fourth album Forever, Michael. 1976: The Jackson 5 changes their name to The Jacksons and get their own TV show. 1978: Has movie debut as a scarecrow in The Wiz, an all-black remake of The Wizard of Oz. During filming, rumor has it he would leave the set without removing his makeup. Aug. 25, 1979: His album Off the Wall, produced by Quincy Jones, launches him to superstar standings. Sells over nineteen million copies worldwide. 1980: Michael wins a Grammy for Best Vocal Performance with "Don't Stop 'Till You Get Enough." Dec. 1, 1982: Releases the Thriller album, which sells over fifty million copies worldwide and solidifies him as the 80's king of pop. May 16, 1983: Performs "Billy Jean" at the Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever Special and for the first time he does the moonwalk, later to become his signature move. 1984: During the filming of a Pepsi commercial, his hair catches fire. He has serious injuries and is rumored to have plastic surgery done. Late 1984: He gets his nose slightly narrowed.
Nov. 20, 1984: Gets his star put on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 1985: Co-writers "We Are the World" with Lionel Richie. Also sometime in 1985: Has another nose job and has permanent eyeliner tattooed above his eyes. 1986: Stars in Francis Ford Coppola's Captain EO.
Sept. 1986: Photos of him in a hyperbaric chamber are published in the National Enquirer. Jackson later says it's part of his plan to extend his life beyond its "natural span." 1987: Supposedly tries to buy the "Elephant Man"s (John Merrick) skeleton for a reported one million dollars. Mid 1987: Gets another nose job and all of a sudden has deep cheekbones and his skin has turned white. Aug. 31, 1987: Releases the album “Bad” Which sells over eight million copies. 1988: Releases autobiography Moonwalk.
May 1988: Moves to the Neverland Valley Ranch in California's Santa Ynez Valley. 1988: Gets surgery done to put a cleft into his chin.
1990: Begins to wear a surgical mask in public.
Nov. 26, 1991: Releases the album “Dangerous”.
Mid 1991: Cruises the Caribbean with eleven-year-old actor Macaulay Culkin. Early 1992: Founded "Heal the World Foundation", an organization that helped to improve the lives of children everywhere. 1992: Invites Oprah Winfrey to his Neverland ranch. He proceeds to tell her he has the skin disorder, vitiligo, and this is why his skin complexion has changed so much. 1993: A lawsuit is filed against him accusing him of seducing and abusing thirteen-year-old Jordy Chandler. Dec. 1993: Makes a tv appearance saying he is innocent of the child molestation charges. 1994: Settles lawsuit by paying the plaintiff twenty million dollars. The Los Angeles and Santa Barbara district attorneys do not file child-molestation charges against him. 1995: Releases the album history:Past, Present, Future...
