Colonial Settlement Brochure
Directions:
Pretend that you are a travel agent working for the New
England, Middle, or Southern colonial region. Create a travel brochure that will catch the eye of a common European person. Your job is to encourage people from Europe to move to your colony and settle there. Be sure to include what the colony has to offer and what the colony does not. Identify which region (New England, South, or Middle) you are promoting and include pictures of your region.
Items to include:
1. Economics
• Jobs- How did they make money?
• Trade opportunities, what was traded?
• Food and Natural Resources, what can you take from the land?
• Slavery/Indentured servants. Did they have them, why/ why not?
2. Geography
• Geographic location, near what (ex. water)
• The type of land (good or bad)? Why?
• Names of each colony in the region
• The climate
3. Religion
•What religious groups settled there?

4. Culture
• Population- Who already lives there?
• Who founded each colony and for what reasons? • Recreational activities-What did they do for fun? • Arguments for why it is better than the other two regions.
• What were the region’s problems? What made the colony look bad?

    In the tragic setting of Mice And Men, takes place in the 1920’s to early 30’s. During the Great Depression people try to find jobs to survive the lifestyle of that time, The two main characters of this story George and, Lennie who are complete opposite. However they remain loyal to each other despite the difference. Steinbeck uses a lot of foreshadowing throughout his book. For reference, Steinbeck refers to Lennie as an animal. “Lennie dabbled his big paw in the water…” George, later in the book, says “Ever’ Sunday we’d kill a chicken or rabbit. Maybe we’d have a cow or goat.” At the end of the book George kills Lennie. This is foreshadowing because Steinbeck is hinting that George would eventually kill Lennie as he said they’d kill an animal every weekend. In this case Lennie was constantly compared to an animal.     Carlson killing Candy’s dog leaves Candy wishing he’d done it himself, whereas when George killed Lennie, he isn’t left with guilt. “Look Candy…This ol’ dog jus’ suffers himself all the time. If you was to take him out and shoot him right in the back of the head – right there – why’d he’d never know what hit him.”() Carlson made it obvious that he wanted to kill Candy’s dog but that the dog wouldn’t suffer. Wanting the best for his dog, Candy allows Carlson to kill him. Later regretting his decision, Candy wishes he would have done it himself. Since George sees the pain and suffering Candy goes through after he expresses that he “oughtta shot that dog [himself]… shouldn’t oughtta of let no stranger shoot [his] dog” (), George takes matters into his own hands when the entire ranch is out to kill Lennie. George decides to be the one to kill Lennie because he didn’t want Lennie to suffer at the hands of Curley. Curley stated that he would shoot him if he found him and slim planned on locking Lennie up in a mental hospital if he found him alive. George had always looked out for Lennie and did what was best for him. Continuing to protect him, George made sure Lennie had no pain while killing him. He told Lennie to “think of the land and the rabbit,” then shot him right in the spine and neck to cause instantaneous, painless death. By killing Lennie himself, George isn’t left with guilt or regret. Both of these instances where Carlson kills Candy’s dog and George kills Lennie, supports the theme of loyalty and friendship. Carlson was looking out for Candy’s dog and didn’t want him to suffer any longer, so did a horrible act so that Candy didn’t have to. George knew that Lennie would continue to get into trouble and maybe hurt more people, so did what was best for him. If George had not killed Lennie, he knew someone else would in a more painful way. His entire life with Lennie, George protected him and did the same the day he killed…

    In the United States Criminal Justice System, there is a category of defenses that may excuse an individual who has committed a criminal offense of responsibility for their actions.
