Miami School District Negotiation
Moving children to a new school affects more than just the children. It affects their families, the schools, and the community. In Miami, the school boundaries must be redrawn to address overcrowding. Although experts are carefully evaluating and choosing the new boundaries, the stakeholders who will be affected by the changes have concerns. By first identifying the stakeholders and their concerns, a plan to address each concern can be established. Selecting a negotiation strategy and reviewing the effects of ethics and culture will ensure the negotiation approach is appropriate for the situation.
Who are the Stakeholders
The children who must change schools as well as the children who do not move schools are primary stakeholders. The children who change schools will need to learn a new campus, new teachers, and classmates, and leave the comfort of familiarity. The parents of the students are the next stakeholders followed closely by the school’s teachers and staff. The parents are affected by a different location of the new school as well as a new school environment for their children. The teachers and school staff are affected by the redistribution of students and class size. The last stakeholder is the general community. Changes in school boundaries could influence property values, whether residents have students in the school district or not.
Stakeholders Concerns
Each stakeholder has valid concerns for the school board to address. Some of these concerns are the changes in the quality of education, increased travel time, crossing economic and cultural boundaries, changes to property values, and the social effect for the children. Before the school board can relay the plan and work through each item, a careful analysis of why the concern exists ensures maximum satisfaction for the majority of stakeholders.
