Miami School District Negotiation
As times change, so do demographics. In the Miami School district, an increase in student enrollment has caused a need for the restructuring of the district’s boundaries. Outside, expert sources were hired by the Miami School District to redraw the present boundaries to accommodate the increase in enrollment. This redrawing of boundaries is to be submitted for the following school year. Obviously a redrawing of present boundaries will call for a drastic change in student demographics which has parents of the student body greatly concerned. Parents are in objection to this change, and have verbalized this objection to the school board. The Miami school board is now tasked with explaining and educating stakeholders to the needs the district is presently faced with. Advantages as well as disadvantages will play an equal part in this education of parents and stakeholders. This paper will address the path the school board has chosen to take in this situation, as well as the issues that are of concern to the parents of the student body.
Quality of Education
Moving is named as one of the most stressful situations that people will deal with in their lifetime. Considering a young person of school age, taking them from their present environment of friends means more to them than anything. These changes can cause a major disruption in that child’s outlook upon their world as they see it. Learning abilities can most definitely be affected in a child that has been faced with change. Parents of children are concerned how these proposed changes may very well affect their children. New friends, new teachers, new surroundings can often be a challenge that some children may simply not adjust to quickly. In cases of older children in high school, this change could easily affect the pursuit of college life through disruption of grades.
