Biosphere Worksheet

Section A: Answer the following questions in complete sentences. 1. Define biosphere. Describe the part of the biosphere where humans can survive. DesJardins (2007) stated “the earth’s biosphere is the thin band surrounding the surface of the earth in which life can survive. Human life can thrive within less than the 2-mile band extending approximately from sea level to an elevation of perhaps 10,000 feet. Roughly 70 percent of that surface area is covered by oceans” (Chapter 2, THE BIOSPHERE: FACTS AND VALUES). 2. Based on this week’s required readings, what are the main causes of threats to the biosphere? DesJardins (2007) stated, “The biggest single threat to the biosphere’s ability to provide humans with a livable climate comes from global warming”. Some other threats to the biosphere are population growth, the use of Pesticides, air and water pollution, deteriorating/ failing water panels, along with extinction of various species. 3. Define sustainability. What do scientists predict will happen in Earth’s future if we do not increase our sustainability practices? According to the EPA “Everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. Sustainability creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, that permit fulfilling the social, economic and other requirements of present and future generations. Sustainability is important to making sure that we have and will continue to have, the water, materials, and resources to protect human health and our environment” (What is sustainability?). Scientists predict that the Earth’s future is directly affected by the threats listed on question 2 and we can only exist if we increase our sustainability practices. Section B: Fill in the chart with complete sentences.

For each item listed below, identify one related threat to the biosphere. Then, describe business practices that may cause this problem. Finally, describe alternative business practices that may help reduce or avoid this problem.

Threats
Business practices
Alternatives
Food

Processed foods cause diseases and interfere with the ecosystem. Investing in more farming across the globe that produces organic foods and limits the necessity for process foods. This would limit the amount of diseases and harm being put on our ecosystem. Water

Underground pumping creates shortages around the globe causing rivers to dry leaving less and less fresh water resources. Develop a project that limits or decreases the amount of water being pumped. Energy

Nuclear Power creates toxic waste that will harm generation to follow. Solar power is a better natural alternative which promotes eco-friendliness and save money. Pollution

Emission from burning fuels used to power automobiles.
Investing in energy driven vehicle that decreases the amount of pollution put into the atmosphere. Species

Land and water species are dying of due to pollution and landscaping. Use less paper by switching to computerized systems. Limiting the amount of pollution would also prevent species extinction. Atmosphere

Carbon Dioxide in the is being altered by human activities such as eliminating Forests which helps level and maintain the proper amount of CO2 needed for the Carbon cycle. Limit the amount of Carbon that is releasing in the atmosphere by preserving Forest and cutting pollutions. Ecological disaster

Pesticide and Chemical plant food speed up the harvesting process for farmer along them to keep up with demand. This is causing an ecological disaster. Invest in eco-friendly fertilizer that will serve the same process.
