Gem Group Incorporated, doing business as Gemline, added me, Nik, to their product development team at a time when many other elements in my life were improving.
I reconnected with an old flame and my dog, Leonard, is thinking of becoming housebroken. Because of my exemplary performance and successfully demonstrated critical thinking skills during the first six months of service, management at Gemline sent me to a remote island paradise in the South Pacific named Kava. Gemline is a premium supplier of promotional products such as backpacks, duffel bags, totes bags for women, and pens. Gemline was one of the first to build bags overseas and import them for sale in the United States. Since being founded in 1958, Gemline has grown into the 16th largest supplier in the promotional products in the industry (Gemline.com, 2010). The potential benefits for the company as well as the benefits for the island nation of Kava are numerous. I accept the challenge of helping to expand Gemline’s presence in Kava.
My initial impression of the island was not favorable as there was much trash and debris strewn about everywhere I looked. My focus soon changed from how trashed the place was to understanding there is potential for growth from the company’s standpoint. The growth potential is not just for the company, but for Kava as well. There are some internal issues and external influences and threats that pose challenges to the stability of the island nation’s government. Threats such as typhoons and cyclones, tsunamis, and the flooding that accompanies those events may also create trouble for the leaders of Kava. HIV/AIDS, and bird flu are common diseases that plague the small nation. Like many countries around the world, Kava is susceptible to terrorism by both internal and outside forces.
